GiffGaff lost texts

Hi,

I've recently moved to GiffGaff, and I'm experiencing problems with my text messages not arriving. Sometimes the same recipient gets texts from me and sometime they don't. I think it's a problem at my end because the recipients don't have problems receiving texts from anyone else. I've tried all of the things suggested by GiffGaff "support" (basically turn it off and on again) to no avail.

My feeling is that this is basically down to the budget nature of GiffGaff. Could it be possible that they don't buy enough bandwidth from O2 to cope with demand at busy periods?

Does anyone have any similar experiences? If so, did you ever get it sorted?
Ta!

    Hi,

Text messages have no time sensitivity in the system, so while they usually take seconds, they can be delayed by hours or days. However your phone will set a validity time on the message, after that expires the system will simply delete the message.

Typically this is three days, and to be honest I don't think many phones let you change it these days.

Remember also that if its an Iphone the message be be sent by iMessage, and so only be sent / arrive when there is 3G / Wifi coverage.

Another thought is your SMS settings may be wrong, You may want to look at GiffGaffs help to check the SMC number is correct on the phone, normally they are set when the sim is inserted but it could be your trying to send them through the wrong message centre and hence the hit and miss sending.
  • Strange things sometimes happen with both SMS and MMS messages as they can vanish into a black hole like emails have been known to do.
Both Giffgaff and Tesco Mobile run on the O2 network and I have recently lost an MMS and text message (on Tesco) when normally they are delivered in seconds. The SMS was to another Tesco Mobile phone and the MMS was to an EE phone, neither arrived.
The owner of the EE phone commented that vanishing MMS messages seem to be a feature of most networks at present as he has had similar problems.

Activate delivery reports on all MMS messages.

O2 (and others run on it's network) can send sms delivery reports if you put *0# at the start of the sms (it doesn't show on the other side). Other networks support proper sms delivery reports.

Good idea but check if they are chargeable first, some networks charge for them.
  • Thanks all for the useful suggestions. I will activate delivery reports and see if I get any more information about what's going wrong.

Totally non-scientific but experience of texting via Giffgaff, 02 and 3 in the past week has resulted in 0 missing texts for the latter, but a couple of texts haven't arrived from the first two (and Giffgaff uses 02's network doesn't it?).

When previously on Giffgaff I never noticed any missing texts myself, but would sometimes receive or send texts that only part of the message was delivered.

I think it must be an o2 problem rather than Giffgaff. I am with o2 and my texts have been delayed by hours over the last week or so.
