Ubuntu & Virtual PC

Hi Djinn,If you need to use files from Doze you'll need to have VMware Tools installed in the virtual distro you are using. http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/954 has them installed. As for slow, have you got at least 1gb of ram on your pc? You need at lots of ram as you are running two operating systems at the same time and the linux OS uses all of the allotted ram as far as I know.

I've just installed VMTools but not having any luck, not even with music files in fact I can't even play a CD.
I have 1GB RAM. It's slower than windows. I think if it was a RAM problem then both OSs would be slow.
Thanks,

Hi Djinn,
Sorry but I've forgotten what processor I have. It was recently replaced after the power supply blew taking it and the motherboard with it!! It was quite good before and has been upgraded.
I tried ubuntu on 64bit and discovered that I have 32.
What confuses me, and I'm not very technical is that the disc allowed access to windoze files including music.
I think I might just wipe it all off and start again, and use the web site you posted.
Many thanks again,

both ubuntu and knoppix have a live cd, so u can use it virtually.
i prefer the knoppix prog. very simple to use. always finds all my devices easily.
i think you can use both from a usb flash pen too?Get some gorm.0 -

But this isn't what OP wants.
He said " What I need is an easy way to install Ubunto so that it is simple to switch back to and from Windows, and easy to uninstall."

Thanks once again,
I'll try what you say Djinn but I won't have time tonight unfortunately.
Ormus, the Ubuntu disc is fine but you can't save anything so it needs to be installed. Knoppix may have been an easier and better choice for me!!

Hi Djinn,
Thank you very much for your information and sorry for not getting back sooner.
I followed your instructions about easyvm but I'm stuck on
"Add your ubuntu.iso image to that directory..." How do I add the Ubunto from the live CD, or do I have to download it again to the folder?
Many thanks again for your help.

Hi DK,
Djinn is no longer available... almost all of his posts have been deleted.
He did his job well and will be sadly missed by all those he helped!!
Anyways
At http://www.easyvmx.com/ you should have specified CDROM Drives - slave, tick enabled and added a file name eg ubuntu.iso when you finished you need to save the file "My_Virtual_Linux_Machine.zip" or whatever you called it.
Create a folder on your harddisk like ''VMimages" etc.
Extract the contents of the compressed file into the folder created.
now copy the ubuntu.iso you originaly downloaded to that directory and rename it to the same as you used at easyvmx.
when you start the VM you will see that it has two cd rom drives.
The VM will then load the LiveCD, which you can install to that vm as required. once installed delete the iso from that folder. Unfrotunatly you cannot save the state of a livecd but you can set up a permenent home dir with most Livecds.
For multimedia in ubuntu you need to install Automatix - you'd need to apt-get this. For a good walkthrough install look at http://www.howtoforge.com/the_perfect_desktop_ubuntu7.04
all this can be found via google

Why not try http://portableapps.com/ , I'm not sure what you are needing to do but portable apps runs from pen drive/mp3 player and other portable devices and allows you to save to the device you are running it from.
It comes with openoffice, firefox, anti virus, and loads of other useful progs.
Hope this is of use

Very many thanks for your help raptorman and Tyro.
I've got quite a hectic life...5 kids, and it can sometimes take me a while to get round to doing things so I usually save and come back to it later. That's why I didn't notice Djinn had gone. I'm very sorry to hear this he had helped me quite a lot and was so patient. He will be missed here.
