iOS 8.1 for iPhone 4s 8 gb help

My iPhone 4s will not update to iOS 8.1 as it tells me it needs 4.7 gb free of storage space to be able to update! The phone I have is only the 8gb version so doesn't have that much free space. The update itself is 962mb which I have free so why won't it update?

Anyone know how I can get it updated it without having to delete all of my apps?

The update file that is 962mb will be heavily compressed, a lot of the update time will be extracting the contents of this package.

You'll need to back up your content before installing the update. I'd recommend something like iCloud (Now cheap), OneDrive or Dropbox as each of these support auto upload of your photos for backup going forward.

Once the update is installed, you'll be able to restore a backup or install your apps again. I'd recommend setting it up as a new iPhone for good performance.

Apparently if you plug it into your computer and do it via iTunes you won't need to delete anything

As mentioned above, hook your phone up to the computer and iTunes will notify you there is an update available. You need loads of space to do on device updates because it first needs to download the update, then unpack it, then I believe it needs to install itself in space alongside the current iOS installation which basically means it needs at least 3 times the update size to work.

Update using iTunes (I've always found it to be less susceptible to issues as well).

Connect to iTunes, do a back up, do the update.

Yep, connecting your phone up to the computer is a really good excuse to do a full device backup too. It's only sensible!

Thanks everyone that makes sense. I would have tried using my computer first only I don't have one at present I will just carry on using the previous version until I purchase a new PC. At least I know I can update it then.

I have the 4S and having read stories on facebook of friends who have updated and then found their phone is not powerful enough to run ios8, I have decided to live without ios8.
