How sad TBW. I think it was a more common occurrence than is realised
In my Dads case, he was very respectful towards his 'parents' and refused to go looking for information whilst they were still alive. He didn't find out properly, like you until late on in life. When they passed away and we did go looking, we found virtually nothing. No real information about where he came from and a non existent paper trail as nothing was official. We found some letters with a few bits of info. It explained a lot of things to him. He'd had terrible trouble enlisting in the RAF because his birth certificate was 'lost'. In reality, they'd never had it. So many people and things got displaced during the war, that was an acceptable explanation.
It's still way beyond my comprehension how you can keep a secret like that for a whole lifetime.
It's never really caused me any problems - I was angry that they hadn't trusted me enough to know that they were my 'proper' parents and nothing would ever change that but I never felt that it changed anything about my identity.
It did explain a few things though - in my teens I was very interested in genetics (Mendel and his perishing peas!) and when I started asking about my parents blood groups (mines one of the less common ones) and checking eye colours etc. several of my genetics books suddenly went missing. I found out that my adoptive brother had got rid of them. Also , up until I was around 6 or 7, we used to go every month to Highgate Cemetary and put flowers on what I was told was my sisters grave. We stopped once I could read - they were afraid I would realise that I couldn't possibly have a sisters just a few months older than me.:)
My 'handover' was done in Southend and all I know is that my original name was Anne Howard. The baby who died was Carole Wendy and I was given her middle name as my first name and Anne as my middle name.
I'm sure that things like this were very common then and quite a few of us are not quite who we think we are. God knows how all the family kept a lid on it as everyone knew about it.ELITE 5:2

I think there must be a lot if the older generation out there with no birth certificates
My Dad was one of them.
He was fostered out at 4 having been boarded out at 3 - that's all we have, the letter from the home to say his age when he arrived so he has no records of where he was beforehand.
We know the name of his father because we think it was him that took him but its a common name. The rumour is that his mother went into a mental hospital - it was all on one site, the hospital and childrens home - a few years earlier it had been the workhouse.
But my Dad does not know his mothers name so we have never got anywhere - not long after we lost mum I did a lot if research but we didn't find any more info than we already knew.
I think it was a sadness to my Dad.
His Dad could have gone to England, many if them did, he might have married again and there might be half brothers and sisters out there.“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. Every day will allow you, --will invite you to add something to the pleasure of others, --or to diminish something of their pains.”0
