Keeping an upright freezer in a garage - is it really as bad as the makers say it is?

  • I've had a Smeg upright in the garage OK

Otoh, we had our Smeg f/f in the conservatory that adjoined the kitchen in our last house and we had no end of issues with it :o

I bought a BEKO freezer a couple of years ago and the refrigerant in it is specifically for low temperature use. I would be insured for the freezer contents if it failed due to cold weather but wouldn't be if I used my Bosch one out there. It is a bit flimsier than the Bosch, but is for long term rather than daily use.

We used to have an upright fridge-freezer in our rented house that was kept in a shed outside. During a colder than usual winter it stopped freezing things adequately. The landlords replaced it with an upright freezer only (i.e. no fridge bit) and that was fine.

We have a Beko upright in our garage, had it for around 3 years. We have a frost free one which is lots better as we don't get the ice build up.
  • We have a chest freezer that's new in our garage and it's been fine for a year.
We also have an upright fridge freezer and the freezer cuts off in cold weather and thaws (because the motor doesn't come on when the external temp is as low as the fridge temp). This is obviously only a problem on very cold nights (& occasionally days).

Just looked and the frost free beko is guaranteed to operate to -15 degrees.

Bekos are fine in a garage. They use a different refrigerant from all the others. Sadly, though, they're let down by the build quality.

It suits your needs. Bosch maybe better quality but only last a week in the garage.

Touch wood, I've been lucky with mine.
  • In our last house we had a Beko freezer in our shed for 6 years we lived there with no concerns. Still have the same freezer, albeit inside now and working as it should.
