5W 30 oil ?

    Erm... No, actually it doesn't, that is what the manufacturer recommends. Manufacturers recommend lots of items, such as OEM stuff, which is available elsewhere, often cheaper and under another brand.


    For example, my wife's car has a corroded rear box exhaust band, a common fault on Citroen C3s.


    Citroen don't supply it separately and say you need a complete rear exhaust, whatever state it is in. Fortunately some enterprising companies have fabricated the bracket and for £10 you can buy one, instead of the £100+ rear box complete.


    Viscosity is important in oil and that is what the numbers represent. And it has to be to a certain standard, which is what the codes represent. There is no rhyme or reason for it to be different colours. I am colour blind, what good is it to me? I'll read the spec and take it from there, plus pinch of salt on what the manufacturer recommends.

    While I agree with you whole-heartedly on the exhaust bracket problem, I can't see what is wrong with following the manufactures stated oil spec.

    I certainly don't buy it one litre at a time from the main dealer - but the spec is for a reason. I think that I would be nuts to use anything other than the 0W-30 C3 LL04.

    I can't go and pour in the cheapest 10w-40 from Asda for example. Would you do that?

    Because I noted that what your vehicle 'needs' does not necessarily equate to what the manufacturer recommends.


    I also alluded to the fact that different colours were pointless and is in fact just a marketing gimmick by the companies.


    Oil spec is mainly a marketing tool to separate you from your money.


    The only car I ever met that was really strict about oil was the Mondeo, if it didn't get its 5W/ oil, the tappets let you know first thing as it went clackety clack. Never did use 10W/ again.

    I used to like having green oil.

    Back in the day I put Duckams Q20-50 in just about every car I had. ;)

    ok, thanks all, but lets get back to my original question.


    I have a 10 year old Nissan (petrol) with 100,000 miles on it. I WANT to make sure when it requires a top of oil it is getting the right stuff, so that it goes for another 100,000 miles. When it was serviced it had 5w 30 oil put into it as per handbook.
    I mentioned Tesco oil but also Halfords oil DO NOT have NISSAN on their 5w 30 oils, mainly named ones are Ford, Vauxhall, BMW etc.
    So I will of course use 5w 30 oil, but does it matter it is meant to be for eg. Ford or BMW?
    More thoughts, and thank you everyone.

    Look in your manual and if it mentions API SL then this will do the job.

    Being a petrol and non turbo (I presume) any old oil that meets specs in viscosity required will be more than good enough :)
