5W 30 oil ?

I have never actually been out and bought a litre of oil in recent years, so the £12.00 was just a price i grabbed off the net when i googled that 0W-30 C3 LL04 in castrol edge that ice mentioned
My car just goes into the dealers once a year and i just pay the bill and the car never seems to use a drop of oil from year to year
Castrol Edge 0w30 C3 LL04 is £30 for 4 litres in Costco.
Guess what.
I didn't have to Google that.
I knew it.
Which is why i felt compelled to offer advice.
And Tesco don't just sell 1litres.
And they are not cheap.0 -
Same reason people would buy oil from Wilkinson - price.
Now personally I don't car what oil goes in - I buy a 5/30 FS but semi-S if it's cheaper. And I suspect a lot of people who drive budget used cars will not be too fussed either. Less than a grand on a car is in a territory where you use is for a year or two then pass on your problems to someone else for which you buy another - and there is certainly not a shortage of cheap cars out there with few or negligible problems..
I apologise for maintaining my vehicles with the correct specification of oil.
I suppose there must be a reason why I have never had an oil related failure in any vehicle I have owned or maintained.
I still maintain a £500 car correctly.
I just don't see the benefit in running a car into the ground for the sake of correct oil usage.
And I don't think it very MSE to do so.0 -
How much fuel do you think you'll save buying this type of 5/30 over that type 5/30? A negligible sum I suspect.
Realistically a cars more likely to hit its shelve life for a bundle of other reasons long before you see any
affects of using the wrong type of 5/30.
of course the manufacturers aren't gonna be agreeing with this any time soon since they want your money for the 'better' oil your car needs
Probably something like 0.5% which may be £5-£15 depending on base consumption and service interval. Either way, it's working against the cost saving. I agree that worn out engines are rarely the end of cars, but it's a poor area to penny pinch imo.0 -

Having run cars with very high mileage I'm sure the reason they keep going at those mileages is the use of the correct oil. Saving a few quid on cheap oil or incorrect oil is a false economy in my view. I also make sure I change the oil on schedule based on mileage rather than time if that comes first so I'll change at 10k miles even if it's not been 12 months. Maybe overkill but I'd rather not take that risk.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
Interesting info, thanks very much everyone.
I have a petrol Nissan coming up to 100,000 miles and still going strong, and I see know reason not to get another 100,000 miles out of it.
As my engine is petrol would I be correct in saying for top up any 5w 30 would be ok?
More thoughts please. Thanks.0 -

the nearest costco to me is around 85 miles away, and i don't have a costco members card so if they were giving castrol edge away for free it wouldn't be any good to me whatsoever
my nearest tescos is 30 miles away so i wont be going there either0 -

How old is it?
I'd prefer a 5w40.0 -
Go for a mid range one that meets A5 standard and it should be fine.0

I've never had an oil related failure either and I've been known to mix velositys.0
