Finally leaving AOL but....

I've had internet services for 20 years now and always with AOL. Unlike others I've mainly had a good service and in recent years they have offered amazing deals to stay with them but their lack of fibre optic bb has finally made it time to leave. I've spoken to them twice and apart from a half hearted attempt to switch to talktalk (I appreciate they are now the same company) they are happy to let me go, but they've warned me that I will lose my current phone number and be charged a re-connection fee of £100 plus to switch to a new provider (AOL also provide my landline and phone calls), is this true? I also don't need a MAC code as I'm on something called the LLU network (?). I obviously would rather not change my landline number as it's been the same forever but with 4 or 5 people at home fibre is becoming a must. Any guidance much appreciated.

OK - just spoke to a lovely lady at Plusnet and she reassured that no need to change number or re-connection fee - AOL's feeble effort to scare me into staying has made me more determined to leave...0

was going to say thats utter rubbish, its not AOL's line so they can't retain it as such which is sort of what they were trying to saying with the reconnection fee.
I wouldgo with plusnet over talktalk!!Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0
