In these parts there seems to be an unwritten rule that if you have no pumpkin or decorations then you aren't participating. We had about 6 knocks last night and we had a 'happy halloween' sign up and a couple of pumpkins.
Spoke to my next door neighbour this morning who had nothing up and she told me she hadn't had a single caller and her DH was now happily eating all the sweets.

We never go to a house that does not have something up for Halloween. Both my neighbours had sweet this year but turned the lights off so people didn't knock.

That's a shame Torry. You are depriving yourself of so much fun. Still if you celebrate Christmas etc you are enjoying your own wee fairy stories so each to their own ;)

To me and others though it is isn't s fairy story but the birth of our Saviour!!

As are the origins of Christmas and Easter

They really aren't!! Yes there have been celebrations at that time of year before Christianity but they are about the birth and death of Jesus and nothing else.

That's why I was surprised to get children round as there was nothing to indicate we were taking part.
Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

I was the only house with any decorations, i had about 8 lots of trick or treaters, and no one after 8.00, there were hardly any people opening their doors according to my daughter. Bit dissapointed!!
  • I see it as a pagan festival and so in that sense I don't approve of it. Hence why I said I don't mark it in any way.

It's christian, it was thought that on the day before all sants day, the demons can wall the earth. So If you went out after dark you had to dress like a demon so that they would not recognize you as a humun.

Or something like that anyway! I was told this at school a long time ago.

It's All Hallow Eve, the eve of All Saints Day, but like most Christian festivals it was places over older pagan festivals to help assimilate those religions into Christian doctrine.

We had about 3 groups of kids all night, and that included the neighbours children! All of the visitors had made a fantastic effort, where polite and accompanied by their parents. As a result we now have a huge amount of sweets to get through - I am sure that with the help of my 8 year old son I will manage though - it may be a push, but with a bit of effort I am sure we will make sure it doesn't go to waste :)

Any MSE peeps in Milton Keynes with a sweet tooth please PM me for free goodies!

Took my 4 year old to a party yesterday, got home at 7.30, switched the lights and decorations on, put the buckets of sweets next to the front door ..... and no-one came! Other years I've hardly got further than a few feet from the front door before the bell rings again up til at least 9 o'clock.

PS - all sweet-lovers will be required to collect in person and must be in full costume. Ear plugs are recommended as the psycho-toddler has a tendency to emit ear-splitting shrieks when excited.
  • Myself and neighbours usually get loads of trick or treaters at Halloween but none this year although others in the road did get them.

I now have loads of chocolate and sweets to eat!
