Stavros, can't say without knowing your income tax rate. You can get more than 9% before tax for up to 25,000 at Zopa with one to five year tie-ins and you can average more than that with investments. None of these guarantee the value of the capital and over the short term the value can decrease.

Me Too, what time is he on ??. I was going to buy £30k worth in January, am I better putting it with the rest of my capital (60k) in a high interest account
You could try chatting to an IFA, assessing your risk profile, and sticking some of it into better investments than Premium Bonds.

Or go with the savings, it's your call in the long run.

For myself, if I had that much I'd complete my fund portfolio and finally get it to match my risk profile rather than being a bit disjointed :D

    Here you go.

    http://www.nsandi.com/products/pb/haveYouWon.jsp

BTW, I want 10% of any winnings;)
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:
  • After waiting 6 months with no win at all on my 30K's worth of PBs I decided drastic action was needed.
    I purchased :
1 hanging money frog to hang inside my front door with coin in his gob pointed in towards my house as advised on the box. £8.99.
1 Feng Shui money mobile to hang in the money area of my house. £9.99.
1 Feng Shui growth bowl that I put my PB holders number in £8.99.
1 lucky money wallet for my husband with a photo of me and the dog looking adoringly at him as advised by the note that came with it, £21.
I then placed a cosmic order on the tail end of listening to my Paul McKenna "I can make you slim" CD (because the CD makes me so relaxed and my mind uncluttered).
    Results - this month I won £50 :T

Secretly, don't tell the universe this, but I am a bit underwhelmed... at least after my expenditure, I have made £1.03p to put into my pennies bottle..The good news is that I have lost 16 pounds so far using my P.McKenna CD. icon14.gif

No one holding PBs is ever gambling their stake,

You're wrong - see the last sentence of my post (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=5971365#post5971365) above - you are gambling your stake - your stake is the forgone interest, not the capital you deposit with NS&I.
However, surely anyone investing in any product, be it PBs, shares, standard accounts should (and hopefully will) review how the account works and the possible returns first?
    Indeed.
No one holding PBs is ever gambling their stake, so you can't compare with the lottery in that way when you loose your stake when you buy your ticket.
The most direct analogy with the lottery is deposit £30,000 in (e.g.) ICICI, and gamble the montly interest on lottery tickets. (Or as Martin suggested today on Radio 2, go to the bookies and gamble the interest on the Irish Lottery.)
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries
  • I sort of caught the show today (listened whilst driving in heavy traffic). I think I heared it mentioned that PB's are non transferable at death. Does this mean that if my parents (who have bucketloads of PB's) die, I will have no way of cashing in their Premium Bonds?
