Flight Delay Compensation - Extraordinary Circumstances

My Emirates flight out of LHR to Dubai was delayed, we were told, due to ten no-shows and resultant removal of baggage. I believe they were slow to take action in removing the bags and this delay meant the flight slot was missed. This all resulted in my missing my connection and arrival at my final destination more than 7 hours late. Both my flights were on the same ticket.
Can the airline deny compensation for which I otherwise believe I qualify, pleading "extraordinary circumstances" for what must be a frequent occurrence with which they have to deal?
