EON Fixed Deal

I am very curious as to whether anybody s getting the sack for allowing existing E.On customers to get the £30 cashback through the MSE switch.
All it takes is a Breakfast TV item to publicise it, and the chaos will commence. If one million existing E.On customers sign up for it, it's £30million E.On has spent, plus MSE's commission, and the admin cost, without gaining a single customer.
If I was a shareholder, which I'm not, I would be livid.
I agree it is odd that Eon will be paying commission to MSE just for their existing customers to sign up to the new tariff. It would be cheaper for Eon to give their existing customers the £30 to stay instead of probably £60 they give to MSE.0 -
If you were a shareholder, which you're not, would you not also be livid if eon didn't do anything to stop the exodus of existing customers to other suppliers, often smaller & cheaper?
The normal drill is for the comparison site to say we can't switch you, because it's the same supplier. Welcome cashback is for luring new customers.
Keeping existing customers via an MSE cashback is just bizarre. Loyalty discount like 1% for one year loyalty, 2% for two year, etc. is more sensible.0 -
I changed my Eon tariff last Sun 23 Oct, from (Fixed 1 yr v6) to (Fixed 1 yr v11) after receiving an email alert from them on 22 Oct ....
"You signed up to our Price Alert service so we wanted to let you know about our new tariff E.ON Energy Fixed 1 Year v11. The unit rates on E.ON Energy Fixed 1 Year v11 are the same as those on your current tariff, .....".
I had 14 days to notify a cancellation, but assumed v11 was a good deal since I've been with Eon for about 10 years and although not the top rated cost wise, they were not far off if you take into account all the various discounts (paperless, online and dual fuel). I also think their energy saving advice and energy monitoring graphs are very good.
While waiting for the 14 days to pass, I then got the MSE Collective email on 29 Oct saying Eon was the winner, so I started to look into how that might affect me against my recent switch to v11. Of course, just like most on this thread I realised the MSE tariff was much cheaper than v11, by about £166 + £30 cashback, so £196 in total or 17% (196/1129) .. wow that was a surprise!
So I rang Eon and asked about going to the MSE Collective, and the customer service guy, who was Irish and I was unable to understand hardly a word he spoke, mentioned that collective only apply if 'most of the people who live near you' also want to go with the collective. WHAT .. is he talking about .. utter rubbish! That would only apply for Oil fuel collective schemes where the distribution is 'local area' to save transport costs .. IMO.
The second time I rang, another guy said why don't I look at the alternative tariffs they offer, like v12. This was the first time I had heard of v12, since I hadn't received an email alert about it (not sure why not, but I may not have checked the notify alerts box?).
Anyway, I checked out the costs using my spreadsheet which I've used for the last 10 yrs to track my energy data, and v12 was what I decided to go with. Not worried about losing £30 cashback though and well pleased I heard about v12 almost just by chance.0 -
EON REP
I changed from EON two years ago to EDF, I am now out of a fixed deal and looking at the EON fixed rate, I still have an economy 7 meter which gives the two readings and a total, however, I use around 23% night rate, so doubt I am really saving anything.
If I were to swap over, would I need to change my meter ?0 -

Hi JontyW
I'm sorry you were given such poor advice when you first called. Sounds as though the advisor was talking about a different thing altogether.
During the initial sale, the MSE Collective Switch tariff is being dealt with only by the Cheap Energy Club. Our advisors shouldn't be discussing it but directing customers to MSE for details about the product.
Price Alerts are our online service where we send customers on fixed price deals an email to let them know if there's a newer version of their fixed tariff available.
The alerts are sent no later than 10 days after a new version launches.
Given how quickly recent versions have been released, this time frame can sometimes put the alerts out of date. Sorry about this. I'll feedback on it.
Price Alert isn't an option with the MSE Collective Switch tariff as it's a standalone tariff. As such, there won't be any new versions launched in the future.
I know you've already signed up for the alerts JontyW but, for the benefit of others, customers need to be on an eligible tariff, have an online account and also need to opt in to receive the notifications.
Sorry again about the poor advice but hope this explains a bit more.

Hi Happychappy
No, you don't need to change the meter to go on to a single rate tariff with us. With Economy 7 meters, we add the night and day rates together and charge all the electricity at one rate.
I agree. Probably need to use more than 23% on the night rate to benefit.
Hope this helps Happychappy.

Hi Malc,
You say that the threshold to benefit from econ 7 is 23%. But when I contacted Eon to switch to Fixed v12 the lady whom I spoke to said it was 40%! Until then, I had actually thought it was 30%.
Is there a standard figure or does it depend on the actual plan or other circumstances?
Many thanks.0 -
Morning legalfreak
The 23% I mentioned in reply to Happychapppy wasn't meant as a threshold figure.
I was just speculating that it didn't sound enough usage to benefit from night rates.
There isn't a particular threshold figure that can be applied universally. It depends on the tariff prices in the particular region and the usage pattern at individual properties.
I suspect the figure quoted by our advisor was based on the details she could see on your account.
To be sure, best to work out each case individually.
Sorry for any confusion.
