Well, it depends. Some people like to put debt OnBudget as it were. Personally, I simply designated a day as 'clean slate day' and from that moment on, all debt was in the past. I still pay towards it, but I treat it as a bill. All my accounts have positive balances and have done from that day so I know exactly where I stand each month. My cards are offbudget debts and simply receive a payment once a month to represent payments made. The positive balance is what I actually budget with as far as YNAB is concerned.
Finally, I closed all cards and lending streams as far as possible and forgot or never learned the PIN numbers so they cannot be used. If I want something, it is categorised and budgeted for now.Debt Free! Long road, but we did it

Well done FireWyrm I always enjoy reading your no nonsense kick up the backside posts as it is the sort of telling off I needed when I was in debt (and occasionally now when I fritter money).Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)0

The truth is, until YNAB, I didnt think that I had any money at all to throw at the debts and would simply pay minimum amounts on credit cards and cross my fingers that nothing bounced at the beginning of the month.
I used to do the same and now I have ynab I feel so different - I don't have any more money coming in but I don't have that moment about a week after being paid of looking at my bank balance and trying to work out where all my money is and panicking all the time and just feeling so out of control! It really is great.
Also FireWyrm, you do talk sense - thank you
