I had a look at YNAB but realised my finances really aren't complicated enough to be worth the effort.

I get paid on 28th, all my bills go out on the 1st, anything left over can be spent or saved, repeat.

I like it because it made me look at infrequent expenses and save money to cover them, I didn't realise I had so many until I used YNAB, 2 caravan clubs at £44 each, MOT and service for my little car, caravan storage £300 a year, and insurance £250 and servicing £150, professional fees at £100 a year. These things used to catch me out, but not any more.

  • Hi Firewyrm

I loved reading your post. We have to celebrate each little step to keep our motivation going.

I too have far too many "Little Friends". I have killed off three so far with L1ttlewoods being my next target, which should hopefully be gone by the end of this year.

Got to keep chipping away at them. ;)

I too love YNAB, and I have been meaning to invest in a Filofax, but keep shying away from the cost.

I forget birthdays frequently, I forget to carry my diary with me. I think a Filofax would really be great, to keep everything in one place.

I might have a little google see if I can find a decent priced one somewhere.

Well done, keep going. You're doing great xxxx

I dont often post progress because it is so slow. As of late last year, it has started to move much more quickly since I am now in a position to throw £850 a month at it. This isnt boasting, it is just a fact. The truth is, until YNAB, I didnt think that I had any money at all to throw at the debts and would simply pay minimum amounts on credit cards and cross my fingers that nothing bounced at the beginning of the month.
I too love YNAB, and I have been meaning to invest in a Filofax, but keep shying away from the cost.

Well, there is that. However, mine was paid for out of quidco rewards and cashback. I actually have three in total for different purposes. My zip up compact pennybridge (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007NYVLZY/ref=sr_ph?ie=UTF8&qid=1414759478&sr=1&keywords=filofax) goes everywhere with me and doubles as my wallet and of course, holds receipts ready to be filed in YNAB when I get home.

My personal size Finsbury was a personal Christmas present to myself last year and was actually my first one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Filofax-Finsbury-Personal-Organiser-Raspberry/dp/B004VQVHBK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1414759542&sr=8-2&keywords=filofax) and holds any general plans for when I go shopping and what to buy. It has lists of things that need to be bought, are planned or are being researched.

Finally, my A5 which was a birthday present this year (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Filofax-A5-Malden-Organiser-Purple/dp/B007RLLC70/ref=sr_1_27?ie=UTF8&qid=1414759763&sr=8-27&keywords=filofax+A5) is a household binder with sections for Finance, Projects, Events etc. I use this for heavy duty planning and the Personal for out and about, if I am going to buy a specific thing. The A5 currently hosts all the account numbers, contact numbers, forecasts for energy use, latest card statements, projects and information on what I want to buy for those.

I'm not for one second suggesting you should spent that much money, there are cheaper alternatives, but before you do buy a filofax I suggest you think carefully about how you intend to use it and then buy one to fit that requirement.

I used to read posts about credit cards and almost laugh thinking poor souls its ok mine are not so big. It is only when you stand back and look at how much it is costing to pay minimums. Well for me it kept me awake, stress worry. I was lucky very lucky I managed to get most of them clear by moving money from business accounts etc. But Dear Mr Halifax mmm we had a tough time and it felt like it was taking for ever.

But when it was gone it felt unbelievable.

I actually stood in our local supermarket with a basket full of reduced and started to tell some poor checkout lady how fantastic it was??? Poor thing she just looked at me and must of thought OMG another nutter!

Ok I ddi not climb a mountain, or break the land speed record but it felt like I had.

So good on you. Hope you have better luck than me with the ok now its clear I am going to start saving.
Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A

Congrats Firewyrm on your achievement
Your no nonsense approach always strikes a chord with me as well.

I get the impression, and, forgive me if I am wrong, but I sense you may have torn many a verbal strip off some poor call centre worker in the past ;).

You don't suffer fools, and you advise people to stand up for them selves and sort things out, which is good advice in my view. :T

Hmm interesting. I'll have to go look it up. I usually read Zombie Apocalypse novels, but hey...perhaps a change of pace might be in order.

Considering what may or may not be in the woodshed, and the effects of the triffid-like soupbine whin it starts a-flowerin', you might not feel to far away from your usual genre :D

I was once a call centre worker, so I try to be polite, but firm. I know it is not 'them' causing whatever problem, but the company at large. I also dont waffle. I explain the problem, tell them what I want and the outcome I am looking for. Most call centre workers will either give me what I want, or kick me upstairs to someone who will give me what I want.

Thank you. No, I have been accused of being abrasive and sharp on occasion but I have mellowed in my old age. We should all stand up for ourselves and that means a basic understanding of the law and your rights as a consumer and citizen. For instance, this afternoon I have found myself in a dispute position with my next door neighbour who has been doing some work on the next door property ajoining ours. I have just spent the last hour checking the regulations around party walls prior to taking legal advice on Monday to stop him working and damaging our home. I am hoping that he will prove honourable and make good the damage caused, but I am also preparing secondary plans for when and if that falls through.
