They could have simply put in rsync to replicate your data to another system.

How quickly could that be done and how likely? Most scammers know Windows but not MacOSX.
  • Am really grateful for your replies and suggestions.

Prowla The Mac is currently disconnected from wifi, when the computer re-set and restored, would the scammers configurations and the like still be able to gain access?

I already did have ClamXav on the computer and following this incident, I ran some scans...clearly this is a little too late?
Additionally, I didn't disconnect from wifi immediately after the call.

johndough Had recommended I download Sophos, but since I'm off line on the said machine, I really don't know what to do. Plus, Sophos offers a 30 day free trial only.
  • just went back into clamXav and a pop appeared, prompting for donation, with 3 options: Donate, Pay via paypal or Already donated. I selected last option. That computer is off line.

This pop up was singed 'Mark'.

Can scammers "break-in" / suspicious activity be traced via log lists or any other ways??

Did you get that bogus phone number from Yahoo Answers?

The people on that thread, and they're probably bots, only ever post bogus phone numbers for scams.

If the computer isn't networked then there is no route for the data.
I don't think that clamav would stop those kinds of exploits, as they are facilities which may be used for legitimate reasons.
