This all sounds wrong. Yahoo would not do this, so somehow you are talking to a scammer/extortionist pretending to be from Yahoo. Did you get their number from a popup, internet search, etc?
.
yes a search engine - 0800 024 6900
clearly this is a seriously urgent situation, would one know if my machine has been corrupted by them in the last day or so?
The computer shop said that it would take them a couple of days to get to have a look at my computer as they are so booked up.0 -
At this late stage it is probably useless for me to call Yahoo...
I called this US no. just now: 1-800-318-0612 and it is constantly busy.
0843 538 8115 <---- is this a legitimate UK number or does anyone know of others?0 -

"my time machine has always been turned off."
Yet again we see the cheerful way in which people fail to take backups, and it all then ends badly.0 -
No help to offer, just the caution to anyone else finding this thread.
Only use numbers from official company pages, such as the one from NiftyDigits.
As you now know you've been scammed, but a further search of the number you used, shows it's not only for Yahoo support, but also McAfee. Also BT Technical Support apparently, but the spammer forgot to use a new image.0 -

Of course it has. Have you taken it to a repairer yet?0 -
Hi
Well you should try a clean install using your original disks.
Avast Free AntiVirus for Mac :
ClamXav2 AntiVirus
The above are anti-virus products you can use, but they need downloading and that presents a problem.
For malware there is Sophos.
Step 1Download the malware detection software of your choosing. The best practice is to download this software onto a USB drive from a non-infected computer.
Step 2Boot the iMac into Safe Mode. This is done by pressing and holding the "Shift" key while starting up the computer.
Step 3Install the malware software from the USB drive.
Step 4Run the malware software using the "Full Scan" option. This ensures the deepest scan is conducted on the Mac to detect the malicious software.
Step 5Move all threats to the virus chest. When the scan is completed, reboot the computer normally.

Yes. I know of no Mac software they could have installed that would compromise your security but they might have stolen some personal information. I assume you are not seeing any pop-ups demanding money. I recommend you uninstall Teamviewer.
I also recommend you make two backups on two external drives; better late than never. Time Machine is good for one. Carbon Copy Cloner is good for the other.
You could also temporarily install and run some Anti-Malware software just to check - then uninstall it.

All the antivirus in the world won't help if you've logged someone else into your computer.0
