3G tariff 4G phone?

I'm confused - I am on a 3G monthly sim only tariff with O2 but I have just got a new 4G phone. I don't want to change my tariff for now. According to a webchat advisor if I put a 4G sim in the phone unless I choose to change to a 4G tariff I will not get 4G speeds and so will not incur extra charges. While in the shop the assistant said as long as I don't go over my current data allowance it doesn't matter whether the phone uses 3G or 4G.

  • For once the advisor sounds right, just because you have a 4G phone doesn't automatically mean the network will switch you to 4G.

Unfortunately O2 seem to live in the last century... I am with 3 and they do not differentiate between 3G and 4G, if your phone is 4G capable and you are in an area served by a 4G site, you get 4G.
