    Actually you are wrong.

In 2015 everybody who still owns a paper license will have to upgrade to a photo-card license.

Then the £20 charge will still be charged to me.

I have always thought that is a bum deal. Penalizing people who don't move with a £20 cost, whilst the people who do move, get the changes done for free every time they move address.

Maybe the MSE site might tell us the news about this in early 2016!

It's still 2014 so no need to do it yet and your entitlement to drive is until you're 70 so no need to do it yet.

No, it is only the paper counterpart to the photo licence is being discontinued in 2015.

The requirement to replace the old style paper licence is expected to be announced at some time, but that has not yet been decided. The EU have decreed that it must be by 2033.

If they make it a EU standard Photo ID card, please include EHIC, so I don't have to keep renewing the damned thing. It's a total waste of time anyway. The Travel Insurance insists that you must have one, so you crawl on your knees looking for a hospital A&E that will accept it, and then they just refuse to take it and demand a credit card.
  • I have been asked by a government web site to prove my identity and the first two boxes are supply number of passport or photo driving licence.

I have an expired passport and an old green licence so now I am a non person.

Best to do it via the forms you get from the post office in that case (if still available?)

This thread reminds me i need to update my photocard. Think it expired about 3-4 years ago. Oops.

Just a word of warning for those renewing their driving licences, the DVLA date the start of the new licence on the date your application is processed and then simply add 10 years (minus a day) to that date. I received my renewal reminder, did it all online and now have a licence with a 6 weeks shorter life than if I'd renewed it much closer to the expiry date of my old licence.

Having emailed DVLA they simply said "In law, the Agency is not permitted to issue a licence that lasts for longer than ten years, therefore we could not have issued you with licence for a longer period".

It's not a great deal of money, but since passports automatically add on any unused time it seems rather unfair that DVLA can't or won't do the same.

Awful. At 2.7p a week, that's just profiteering.

    Doesn't matter, it's still a valid warning.

MOT certificates are post-dated to 12 months after expiry of previous certificate. (If done within 1 month of expiry)

Passports are post-dated in line with the expiring passport. (And this is arguably a more important legal document than a driving licence, or at least has equal standing).

So there's no reason I can see why DVLA can't post-date licence renewals - they simply don't want to.

All true - but just to be clear, nothing in my post implied it wasn't a valid warning; I just think for the sake of 18p, it's not worth getting het up over.

Both passports, and MOTs are considerably more expensive per day/week of validity than a DL renewal, so they're more of a concern.

On the assumption that DVLA's response to ads677 was correct, then it's not that they don't want to at all, it's that the law doesn't allow them to. In which case it's the fault of the MPs who voted for it.
