help with marketing

I am trying to help a friend, my internet knowledge isn't great but she needs help and I want to do what I can.

She has an eBay shop & a website - Ebay has been the main selling platform for her and sales have been consistent. Over the last few months she has noticed her sales have dropped, when searching google for her product the results show her main competitor's items (if you click on the link it takes it straight to her listing) - how is this done? How does my friend get her listing to be the first one you see/click on?

I have heard of Adwords - is this it? If so how do I use it and what is it?!

I asked here as its a 'small business' question. I had asked there a while ago but no one knew. Hence asking here. I wondered if there was a way to help her but not sure on how

As for the comment on getting her to sign up and ask.... She always gets worried of condescending comments that people like to give when they aren't sure how to help - so reply 'picking' at the post rather than being helpful (which happens a lot coincidently)
