My local garage, in the wall type, is powered by Nationwide and is free.

Generally you'll find the ones located in or outside shops, pubs etc are chargeable as they are serviced by the shop owner and they get something back for having the machines on their premises as they also stock the machines.

Not read the entire thread, but I was in a SPAR shop the other day, and it was free cash withdrawals for A&L only - it wasn't in the wall, and it was in the shop, but it was definately an A&L one. They just charged for it!!!

There is a benefit in using your own bank's ATM, if you have the choice (and no queue) though. If there is an ATM problem (like dispensing the wrong amount) it will be FAR quicker and easier to resolve if there is only one bank involved.

Conversely, there was an episode a few weeks ago where someone loaded the wrong notes into the wrong drawers and as a result, £20 notes were being dispensed instead of £10 ones.

HSBC said they would automatically adjust their customers accounts but would not bother chasing those from other banks!
  • Martin, you mention that cash points around stations tend to be free. However my local train company First Capital Connect has not stripped out all the free cash points and replaced them with pay ones. It's blimmin' ages to walk to the nearest free ones too!

Charging Link ATMs have signage on the machine and on-screen notices that you will be paid before you get to the transaction authorisation stage.

Nobody should ever get charged for a Link cash machine withdrawal (using a debit or cash card - credit cards are obviously different) without first seeing a notice that they will be charged.

Any premises owner can choose if they want free or charging ATMs and make a deal with the relevant bank/other provider. So generalising on the basis of type of location is wrong.
  • The bank I work for have asked all staff that dont bank with them to use our ATM's, it means we "win" when it come to settling up the exchange between LINK members for machine usage. We also have an ATM in the lobby of our building (not a branch) to help with this.

It drives me barmy. If I goto morrisons, the queue for BOS is massive and the abbey atm is empty, now the majority of people are just withdrawing money and not getting mini-statements etc. Both atms are also free. Why queue?

Mind you, if it means I don't have to queue ;)

Be careful. The others may appear to be working but sometimes the fraudsters block the card units to encourage the use of one particular machine in which they have installed a skimming device. To avoid always ensure that you cover your hand when inserting the pin number.........

I never use Abbey machines and will walk or drive somewhere else to withdraw from other machines simply because I used to be a savings account and mortgage customer with them and dont trust anything they provide, not even the machines.
I have a deep burning indifference

That's not allowed. However, banks do not want to chase non-customers as it would be a PR disaster. This would mean that the banks would admit to the machine (sorry the person loading it) got it wrong!!!!!!!!
