How much for a new boiler?

Options
I'm hoping someone will be able to say whether the online quote from BG is reasonable or not. I'm hoping not...

New combi boiler: £1000-£1200
8 new radiators: £2500
Installation: £2500

So over £6k

Would radiators really cost that much? Installation seems pretty hefty too although it does include any piping needed if the boiler was moved.

Background: 70s house, nothing has been improved since it was built so I'm working on the assumption everything will need replacing (I understand new regs mean each radiator needs a temp control - something the current ones don't have).

Any advice?

We had a complete replacement in a 1920's stone built house four years ago, the back boiler was replaced with a Worcester combi boiler, all radiators were replaced as was most of the pipe work. There were 14 radiators. The back boiler was situated in the living room, the new boiler was in the garage which was the opposite side of the house.

It's been a while so I don't know breakdowns eg radiators cost etc but the entire job was £7500, this was done by a local firm.

British gas are always over priced, your location can play a big part on the price - lower up north, higher down south. Best get a few independant gas safe engineers in for a few quotes

    Guestimate..

Boiler - £1400 (See eBay for Supply & Fit) Supply & Fit with 7yr warranty
Rads - £40-£100 each (See Screwfix website) Supply Only
    Pipework?

I would like to think that this can be done for under £3000, and i would look on eBay for fitters that can supply & fit a boiler, inc warranty. Check the Gas Safe number against the Gas Safe Registere etc.

Do not go for eBay boiler fitters.

That's a lot of money - as a comparison, we had a new WB 34CDI installed located the other end of the house so had to be fully routed to the back, new rad in diff location, 7yr parts and labour warranty - £2500...... I can't see how 7 extra rads would cost another £3.5k+! Go for a locally recommended installer and I reckon you'll be paying approx £3.5k max.

Thank you all for your advice.

I think we will go down the locally recommended route. In my head I had a £4k guesstimate so I'm relived it will be around that.

I'm sure ebay would be cheaper but I'd rather the piece of mind/safety net in anything went wrong.

Choose which make of boiler you want & then see which local independent installers specialise in that make. Parts are so specific these days - you want someone with the usual parts ready to fit. I wasted time and money on a local guy who didn't specialise in the make I had & he never really fixed it. The guy I have now only does my brand of boiler & he knows them inside out.

  • 8 radiators with a modest boiler could be achieved for around £3400 quite easily with a small firm.
  • You should expect to pay around £4k-£5k for that, and if you can hang on a couple of weeks there should be a non-means tested cashback scheme coming which should knock off around £1k. Obviously depends on a number of things the boiler, flexi pipe/copper pipe, push connectors/soldered connections, what heating controls etc etc.
