Help please! Which smart TV would be best?

Hi all,

I've been summoned by the family to buy us a long overdue new TV for Xmas. I've been looking at reviews, checking what I know but I'm still at a loss as to what would be best for us.

Basically - I've been given the instruction! - to buy us a (anywhere between) 47 to 50 inch SMART LED TV (plus a soundbar). I've been looking around and some SMART tvs only offer some of the catch up channels. Ideally looking for one that offers all of them. 3D is not a requirement.

Have a budget of £500 to £800 (would prefer the lower end!) and guessing it would be ideally best to purchase from John Lewis as apparently they offer a 5 year warranty but if cheaper elsewhere would be happy to buy.

From checking reviews I'm thinking would be best to stick to Panasonic, Sony, Samsung or LG - but really am at a loss as to which would be best. At the moment I'm thinking the 48inch Sony TV with free soundbar at Currys £750???

Any TV experts out there that could offer any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, richwhit

AVOID Currys - JL/RS are the way to go.
  • If you need all the catch up services on your TV, then only Samsung have them all and then not on all models.

If you have Sky+ HD, you already have them all.

..and, in fact, don't need a SMART TV!:)

Not necessarily. My LG smart TV (which is a bit dumb really) also has apps for things like YouTube and other offerings which Sky certainly doesn't have. So I can watch these offerings in 55 inch HD without faffing about with leads from my laptop or getting my tablet out.

Most Youtube content is not in HD and is certainly not improved by watching on a larger screen. I do agree it is useful for watching Netflix etc though.

Also ask yourself the question - what will you do with your Smart TV when a channel changes their catchup setup, and your manufacturer doesn't update? Change TV? Maybe a set top box would be better than obsessing over a Smart TV.

I've recently bought a Samsung and am very pleased with it. Has all the catch up channels on it and Youtube and other things that I have yet to explore.

Only think I'd say is to be careful that if you want HD make sure it says Full HD and not simply HD Ready which is not the same.

As posted above, only Samsung currently has all the catch-up services for terrestrial channels within the TV.

The Samsung UE48H6400 has been getting top reviews and is available for about £550 in John Lewis and others. I've only seen it in a shop, but it looks pretty good. As always, only believe your own eyes when it comes to TVs.

That would leave you some budget for a soundbar (or a soundbase, which avoids the need for a subwoofer). Unless there's a good package deal available (and Samsung's soundbars aren't necessarily the best), might be worth getting the TV home first, then judging your need for a soundbar.

I have Sky at the moment, due to a very good deal, but when our tv needs replacing I won't look for a smart model; rather a more basic one and a Youview Humax box to replace the present basic Humax (when we no longer have Sky).

hi, don't know wheather it's the best but it does have wifi built in and a browser so you should be able to go directly to the "on demand" services directly.
i have the 40" version of the tv i'm reffering to, it is a brand that i have never heard of, but i thought i couldn't argue with a price of just £229.99 for a 40" smart tv!!!

the Digihome 48272SMFHDLED is 48" and
is available for FREE fast delivery, i got mine in just 48hours, and shock! horror!! when i saw it was from the good old co-op!!
if nothing else this 48" model is worth a look @ £299.00 then you'll have plenty of cash left over to buy a half decent soundbar!!

so if you google coopelectricalshop, then once there type digihome into the site search and up it pops!
