Budget?
There are the usual chains which you are aware of near you, smaler chains/independants are producing nice (none microwave)type meals, Fiesta del asado couple of miles out of the city centre though, very nice not th cheapest. Bodega is nice at a fair price, the warehouse cafe if you like vegitarean (and even if you don't) .0 -
Unlike many other cities Birmingham has relatively few restaurants other than the normal chains actually in the centre.
The best one we have found is the Pushkar, an up-market expensive Indian on Broad Street near to Jury's Inn. Other ones we use are Jamie's (Oliver) Italian and the Chaophraya Thai both down the steps next to the Bull Ring. For a quick meal we go to Wagamama in Brindley Place - we have tried some of the other restaurants there which we have never wanted to revisit. It is also worth looking around the Chinese Quarter where there are some reasonable real Chinese restaurants with menus that go far beyond sweet & sour pork and other take-away favourites.0 -
You can't go wrong with Chinese esp in the arcadian centre. Plenty of small cafes with very good value food. Cafe Soya is one of my favs. But others are just as good. Dim Sum at Chung Yings is an experience and its one of the best Chinese's in the city.
Some great curry houses around as well. Upmarket Lasans and Puskans in Broad Street.
Great French bistro food at Le Truc.
My favourite is Purnalls Bistro. Amazing cocktails and lovely food, esp lunch set menu.
Italian San Carlos.
Also heard really good things about Love's. But not eaten there yet!But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more0 -

Years back at least, they use to be very select at whom they let in. :eek:0 -
Are you staying in hotel?
If you stay somewhere along Hagley road, and willing to spend £30 per head, try Rose Murree Restaurant, it is indian.
Or may be Fiesta Del Asado, argentine restaurant if you are love steak.0 -
Thanks for all your suggestions so far!
Yes we are staying in the Radisson.0 -
Ignore the poster that said there were no restaurants in Birmingham - there are around 200 of them possibly more.
Purnells is good as they also have a bistro selling great food and cocktails as well as having a restaurant.
Around Brindleyplace - check out these http://www.brindleyplace.com/category/restaurants/
If you fancy Brazilian try here http://www.rodiziorico.com/rodiziorico/our-menu/birmingham.php they are based in The Cube which is behind the Mailbox
A good listing of Birmingham restaurants can be found here http://visitbirmingham.com/what-to-do/food-drink/restaurants/ - you might be able to print vouchers off too.
Enjoy your trip to Birmingham0 -
Gourmet Burger Co. is very nice and reasonably priced, there's one in the Mailbox. Miller and Carter is nice, but it's a bit more expensive. I think there are quite a few good places, budget wise, in Chinatown but I couldn't name more than one, Pepperchef (Hurst Street if you're interested); very good food and very helpful staff.0

Bodega is a really nice Mexican restaurant with great prices as well. I've heard really good things about Turtle Bay as well , although I haven't been there myself yet!0

Few quid in a taxi gets you to the Ladypool Road - where it's shoulder to shoulder balti houses of qualities from excellent to decidedly shonky. If you want to try a great bit of Birmingham history and where the locals eat, go down there and see if one takes your fancy. Ladypool Road is well known for Balti, prices are competitive and you can usually take your own wine/beer making it even more competitive!0
