Personally, I'd get it sorted now, as next door wont regard it as "something stupid" to get a digger in if that's what they decide to do. They will just do it, ie because they know that cables will be far enough underground for it not to matter.....until they discover the bit of "inefficiency" that caused them not to be...

Take my word for it, there are lots of us out there who "know" cables will only be where they are supposed to be..and therefore won't be on the lookout for them being anywhere else (well...you have to trust that the odd person knows how to do their job properly and will do so once in a while....).

overhead power supplies will be insulated from the power poles so they will be as safe as they can be, a lot of the local supplies from the pole to the house are now in an insulated bundle which are safer than the older bare conductors that we still have loads of around here and whilst they look scary they have been in place for many years and never been a problem

Well Joanthebone one week on since you last posted, are you still stumped or are you simply another thread stumper?

I'm sure that many would like to know what has happened since your cry for help.

  • Hi, well, not much happened until yesterday, when two rather laid back guys turned up from ukpowernetworks... they looked in the little trench I had dug and ummed.. and ahhhed a bit, then one of them grabbed the end bit (the bit covered with trunking that disappeared under the back fence) and gave it a good yank... lo and behold it was not connected to anything ... I was deeply embarrassed, but to be honest, I would never have done that, for fear of frying myself!

Then the brave one touched the bare ends of the wires and declared it dead ... so I have a tree surgeon coming tomorrow to get the tree stump out and then I can remove the cables back to the edge of the patio, problem solved...!

Many thanks to all the really helpful people, and the ones who PM'd me, I am sure I have added to the amusement of those who found my situation funny, I hope you have had a good laugh! :)

btw, I only had an email back from Openreach today, they have done nothing.

I did not find your situation funny.

I posted that "The replies to this thread are hilarious" which they were.

However if you had not posted about your dilemma, many of us would not have been able to laugh at the ridiculous comments posted by some so called experts.

Also glad to hear that Openreach have done nothing, as you should not have wasted their time.

Thanks again for for the laughs.

I'm glad you got it sorted! I have a teeny garden so I'd be pretty upset if I found cables under it that meant I couldn't dig/plant anywhere.

  • Glad you got it sorted okay:T. Thank goodness those cables turned out to be "dead", but it was as well to check.
  • Gordon Hose, you would have been welcome to come and 'give em a good tug' but I wasn't going to chance electrocution!

moneyistooshorttoomention and retepetsir, your support and advice was most welcome, thank you.
