    develop your sales skills, ...
your sales experience...isn’t quite to the level that we currently require
    gain some travel sales experience

your letter writing was a fair effort
15 mins aptitude test, you scored 36/50 correctly

^ Those are the areas that need serious thought. Sales skills, which the company has considered are not good enough are very different to 'high end' management skills. 'A fair effort' indicates below par for the course. 36/50 is a poor score.

Finally "we will not be progressing your application further " indicates your OH was simply longlisted at the open evening but couldn't match the competences required to be shortlisted.

He can't afford to work for a lower end company that pays less as he wouldn't be able to live! It just seemed that they kinda brushed him off.

I think that you need to forget this "high end, low end" thing, it comes across as the sort of thing that Hyacinth Bucket would post, and makes little sense in terms of earnings. For example, I had a friend who left Citi to go to a small bank in Dubai, and who added over a million dollars a year to his pay packet when he did so. I went the other way, and took a cut in the move.

If you cant afford a temporary (or permanent) reduction in salary for a job that makes him happy, then perhaps you need to look at your spending. If he's been doing well, then I assume that you have no debts or mortgage, co can you not now get some savings built up, to tide you over during the transition? Can you increase your hours, too?
  • He could work in a local travel agents to gain travel sales experience, maybe practice aptitude tests online.

On the plus side, they do mention twice they want him to reapply, they don't normally say that in a rejection letter

I wish I could get that type of detailed feedback. My last lot basically said "they liked you but they've given the job to someone else."

I agree with Errata on the details he needs to consider.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

    Your biased view is incorrect.

As has already been stated that is highly detailed feedback which has taken someone time to put together, no way on earth could that be classed as a 'brush off'. Looks to me like there are two options - carry on doing what he's doing or take the necessary pay cut to get the experience they want from him, his experience clearly isn't 'high end' enough for them.

PS - Is your surname pronounced Bucket or Bouquet?

There is no need to be rude to me.

Its not. Basically the cheap companies pay £15,000 a year which in central London is not enough to live on. Higher end (its basic terminology - I work in finance I keep it simply) pay more. As you can see from my other posts we are doing our best to reduce both debt and other payments. Yes he needs to be happy but also we cannot afford to increase debt or stop paying out less. We cannot move outside london as this would mean huge commuting costs for me.and or potentially him too.

No - I cant take on more hours I work at least 60 hours a week as an IFA (very early stages) again covered in my other posts.

He was not short listed, he had a full day interview which was confirmed as a final interview. 36/50 is not a poor score - the guy who we booked our honeymoon with got 14 and still won them over.

I agree about the sales skills, but how else can you prove them? working in luxury retail involves an awful lot of selling.

Marshmallow82 thanks for your comments. Sadly he works most weekends etc so work experience is hard to get. But I will ask him to think about taking a weeks holiday to do so - great advice.

It seems unrealistic to expect to move sectors without having to drop a rung or two. The interview feedback was detailed and really helpful - he should be very grateful for that, not describing it as a brush off!
  • I get moving down a rung or two but not cutting your salary from £25,000 to £15,000 in central London.

The interview feedback was helpful but they seem to be giving responses that don't ring true - such as after the initial one what great sales experience / figures he had?! then saying not strong enough sales?

Possibly, but your OH is a 'high end' manager' who manages, not a counter assistant who sells.
