Ripped off by Groupon?

Options
Please can anyone help? I have paid groupon £209 pp for 2 to go to Iceland. I was contacted 2 days later by weekender-breaks.com during this call I was told I would have to pay an extra £38 pp for transfers and £42 extra for reasonable flights. I said no way and to cancel the deal. Then 15 mins later I get an email 'confirming' my booking. I have since tried to get in touch with weekender-breaks (no answer to phone, no reply to email) also contacted groupon who say it's nothing to do with them they just advertise the deals. I have contacted my credit card company now but not sure if they will help. I don't know where else to go. Turns out the Apta number they advertise doesn't exist either!

  • I think it is up to Groupon. When I recently had a problem with them they sorted it out easily. I didn't know what to expect but they were actually really helpful

The groupon travel deals usually make pretty clear what is and isn't included. Cheapest flights often go at lousy times and cheap packages often don't include transfers these days. I guess that's how they get the prices so low! Probably worth checking with groupon if you can cancel if it wasn't clear what was and wasn't included.
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!

They do seem to have an ATOL registration. If you put the number in, they are showing up as one of the trading names within the Hays umbrella.
Perhaps you should double check the small print from when you booked before doing anything else.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Managed to get a full refund. I have informed grouoon that the company don't accept or return phone calls or emails. Also told them the Apta number they advertise is false. I'll see if they still advertise this deal next week.

Not sure where you're getting your info. The weekender-breaks.co.uk website shows both the ATOL and ABTA logo. The bottom of the homepage states "Our ATOL number is 10531". This checks out fine on the ATOL website LINK

They don't actually quote an ABTA number on the homepage but do list it in their terms and conditions as Y60838. This checks out fine as well on the ABTA website. LINK

As for the rest of it, another poster has pointed out the terms and conditions which cover the transfers. I don't see a ripoff here. It seems Groupon have a pretty good customer service and have resolved your complaint quickly.

And people getting refunds when they shouldn't only impacts on things going one way.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
  • Stoneman and bagand96 thanks for your support. The company used underhand tactics. Ie they state 'transfers in selected deals only' as a customer you do not know which deals are the selected deals until they call you back to tell you which dates are available. This is when I found out they wanted another £38 pp. then when I informed them I wished to cancel, as per what it states in the original ad, they went ahead and confirmed the booking, demanding the extra monies. Then no replies or answering the phone. Nobody received a refund when they shouldn't have.

To be fair I was only clearing up the fact that the agent does have the correct industry organisation memberships after you'd made the statement more than once that they were advertising false membership numbers.

And it seems Groupon resolved your complaint very quickly which points to good customer service and not a rip off.

Cheeky. After reading this thread I won't be booking any trips with Groupon!
