  • TBF, if you're doing 12K a year, you're only 'topping up' the oil every 2K miles. As long as you're not putting 5L a time in, that's not exactly unusual. Think yourself lucky you're not driving a VAG 2.0TFSI, you'd be topping up at every petrol station...

On average, I'm having to top it up by about 3 litres every couple of months.

I've spoken to a mechanic mate of mine who said they do usually start to burn oil and there's not much that can be done. How true that is I'm not so sure.

Maybe an RX8 would be the way to go then! :D

I had an Audi with this engine, used a litre of oil every 600 miles!!

Now I have a Scirocco with the same engine, and it hardly uses any,strange....

I believe they put quite a lot of effort into fixing it on later engines. I know my colleague had a new unit fitted under warranty and it was replaced with a later engine build, and no more problem.

That is quite a lot of oil usage, but to be honest I would expect if it was burning oil at that rate, you'd have noticed the blue smoke by now. My money would be on an oil leak.

I haven't noticed any blue smoke. It's due for a service next week anyway so I'll mention it to my mechanic, along with a quote to replace the clutch.

My BKD 2.0 TDI needs a top up of oil every 5k miles or so. Think that's pretty normal for the TDI though

I have a 58 Civic and bought after assessing all it's 5 door hatch competitors, as well as Accord, Octavia etc.

I have the diesel, so cannot comment on the petrol engines, but the Civic has a massive boot, room for 5 adults, really comfy car, the dash appeals to the child in me (its like driving a space ship!). I am very pleased with mine

I'm on my second Diesel Focus, and have been very happy with both.

My first was an 02 plate estate, with 180,000+ at purchase.

It was a former PH car, and cost me just £750.

In 3 years, and nearly 50,000 miles, it cost me ~ £400 in repairs.

It went to the breakers yard (still running, but with a noisy drive train), and earned me £150 from said breaker so, in a sense, it only cost me £500 to buy.

I'd probably go for a civic too. If you're border line diesel and it seems half of your journey is around town, then a hybrid might be suitable. Insight, civic, auris, prius.

The Audi was a year newer (2010) than the Scirocco though...
