My Shopping - But Its Not My Card Thats Been Charged?
Comments

Chances are someone like me got charged and wouldn't notice £7 on their statement.0

Could someone else have been standing nearby and accidentally paid with a contactless card?
Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.0 -

I went back to the shop & suggested that as a reason - but as the receipt says PIN entered & PIN verified they don't think it was paid by a contactless card.
They are just as baffled as I am - their tills reconciled that day so they were paid for the goods, & transactions either side of mine were both cash so even if the card reader had stored someone else's card details (which they say it shouldn't anyway) then that stored info should have been lost during the previous customer's cash transaction.
Would it be possible for a card reader to be faulty & store card & PIN details & keep charging the same card for multiple transactions? I think its unlikely, but don't understand any of the technology.
They haven't had anyone go in & complain they've been overcharged. And as its been 28 days now I would have expected someone to notice if they had multiple transactions....
So they've passed it over to the IT dept to see if they can shed some light on it & they'll let me know.
I do wonder if they will tell me though - if its a system problem & other cards can be charged (as in the card not in the card reader) I can't imagine they'll be too happy to broadcast it.
I'm sure they think I'm just some dizzy female who can't keep track of her cards :rotfl: but I know this mistake isn't mine & I'm baffled as to how it can happen.& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin

I know what you mean about it not being much money but being so much when you don't have it.
That being said. How long ago did all this happen? I too am very honest and would want to get to the bottom of things. However, depending on the amount of time that has past they might not be able to settle the issue. Not sure how long they (the store) keep the records and receipt information etc. I think you have gone above and beyond what most people would have done. I commend you for that.
I wish you lots of luck figure this mess out.0 -

Steady on! I can understand some curiosity and maybe even a bit of guilt on OP's part, but when all is said and done it was £7 charged to the wrong card! Nobody went back to the shop about it and even if someone noticed and was minded to pursue it, chances are they'd have filed a chargeback dispute with their card provider. Baffling yes, but worth pursuing any further, no (in my humble opinion of course)
If it happened with his/her shopping it could clearly happen to others... I'm glad OP is making the shop get to the bottom on if there is something wrong with their PDQ...0 -
I think the OP has done more than enough to deal with it.
I suggest they now leave it in the hands of the bank and store.0 -

The mistake happened on 01/10 & until I noticed the last 4 digits were incorrect I just assumed the shop were slow in putting it through. So its been almost a month - I've no idea how long the shop can access such info for though.Steady on! While I am worried bout the £7 possibly causing hardship to someone, as they haven't gone back to the shop I'm hoping it means they've not noticed & can absorb the loss - not that they should have to do that of course.
I'm with Sam112 - what if this isn't the first time its happened & this particular shop (in a chain of over 400 stores) has had more than one problem? Then imagine that other shops using similar systems could have the same problems....
I'm not trying to paint myself as a consumer champion here at all :rotfl: but the more people tell me that it can't happen (a bank told me I must be wrong when I mentioned it yesterday) the more I want to get to the bottom of how its has happened.
Does anyone know how these card readers work & what happens if they break?& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin

I have left it with the store but I've asked them to keep me informed so I'll update this thread when I hear something.& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin

If you have a receipt and the last four digits don't match your card, it's not your receipt. That will be why it's not debited your account. Check the date and the time, does it match the time you were in the store ?
I've spoken to many people who have had this problem but after investigation it turned out to be someone elses receipt. For £7 i wouldn't be spending any more time on it.0
