For the boy get him that slab of Hotel Chocolate stuff and add a fiver or tenner, whatever you think appropriate. Chocolate and cash has been my gift of choice for boys from age 10 up for years!

As to the girl I second going down to Boots and hitting the 3-for-2 ad buying some appropriate smellies, they have a couple of good girls ranges in the gifts this year. Nail polish always goes down well, as does bubble bath. Or if you're feeling really stuck no child of either sex has ever refused the chocolate and cash combo.

Sorry but I still can't see why is has to be a surprise.

Surely a child (old enough to understand that other people buy them presents at Christmas, not delivered by Santa) would rather have something they want rather than go 'meh' at a gift.

Because often the fun of giving of a gift is the look of surprise when opened

Unless you have a good idea about what they are in to I'd give them cash or take them out somewhere eg pictures.

a 'girly girl' at age 7 (like my granddaughter) would probably be into 'Frozen'. £15 would buy a 'Dressing up outfit' and there are loads of 'Frozen' merchandise out there.
I find boys difficult - unless I know if they are 'sporty' or 'nerdy'. Sporty ones will love anything to do with fave sports and nerdy ones love vouchers to download games etc.
