BT Sports: Beware!

I am moving house so I phoned BT yesterday to give them a months notice to end my BT Broadband. I joined BT a couple of years ago; so am out of contract
No! Said the girl at the other end, you signed up for BT Sports (free) last May and so you have to pay an early cancellation fee of £79 plus £30 for cessation of services.
I am strongly contesting this but suddenly the “penny has dropped”. I naively believed that BT Sports was a bonus; something that was designed to make BT more attractive and give them an edge over the competition. Now I see that it is simply a cynical device designed to lure customers into a continuous contract. As long as you are getting BT Sports you are in contract whether you know it or not.
BT sports is a trap. But worse than that the service is of very dubious value. Yes! They have some plum football matches but even though I am an ardent football fan, BT sports never ever registered on my radar. Sky sports are streets ahead and I always find myself gravitating to the Sky sports News HQ.
So if you are thinking of joining BT because of the “free” sports channels be very, very careful. It is not”Free” and you will find yourself “swimming with sharks”.

The cancellation fee is standard for all ISPs if you don't use a MAC to migrate. Most will absorb it in exchange for a fresh contact if you move house.
I suspect accepting Sports just triggered a new minimum term which is common if you take up some feebie or price reduction from any ISP.0 -
BT Sport is not a trap. It was well advertised that it was free to customers 'taking out a new 12 month contract.'
It's not BT's fault you didn't read what you were signing up for. If you signed up over the phone, it would have been read out to you."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

You have no grounds to "contest" it, and will be wasting your time taking the "contest" route.
When you claim to be "out of contract", this is not so - you and they are in an ongoing contract (albeit with a minimum term).
They tell you this when opting for the "free" for bb customers Sport:Existing customers must re-contract or have 12 months remaining on their contract
So their termination charge is one you agreed to when taking the BT sport!0 -

How long have you worked for BT Quentin? Oops Sorry! You are a lawyer aren't you.
Be Happy!
I am free of BT...For life...YAY0 -
Are you really free of BT? Unless you have moved your phone line and broadband to Virgin you are still paying BT - albeit indirectly.0

User "Bradfield" is indeed moving to Virgin Cable.
