Lidl now have their frozen geese. They cost £17.99 and serve 4-6.

I buy them frozen at a local farm shop, or can order them fresh (and somewhat more expensive) from our village butcher.

Edit - just seen that Lidl now offer them in their deluxe range, £5.99 for 2 birds. Might give them a try!

BBC Goodfood recommend the Pheasant from Aldi. They say it is very tasty and the right size for two!

Well we have enough Nectar points to get all our food on that, but if we don't see anything there we fancy I will definitely look into the pheasant, thank you!
  • If you decide to roast pheasant, lard it well with fat and cover it with streaky bacon for most of the cooking, otherwise it can be very dry. Also be aware there are a lot more sinewy bone type things in the legs than in a chicken.

I've seen on the Aldi website that they're doing partridge this year - personally, I'd go for that rather than phesant!

What would people say is the best way to cook partridge?
  • Cover the bird with streaky bacon. Oven at 200C fan, 220C normal oven. Roast on a rack above your roast tatties for about 20 minutes, remove bacon (keep the bacon and serve it with the bird) and roast for about another 5 mins. Remove and keep warm (cover with tinfoil, place in hostess trolley, whatever you can), allow to rest for 5-10 mins before serving one per person. Helps if you have sharp pointy steak knives to dismember the bird at table, and a rubbish plate on the table.

The very hot oven also helps the roast tatties, a glass of suitable red helps the meal!
