How quick should you pay

Hi, is there any rule as to how soon you need to pay for auction wins?
Generally I pay within 24 hours, or immediately if I am by the computer when the listing ends.
My wife won an item which finished yesterday (Saturday) lunchtime, but as we were away for the weekend we did not get round to paying until mid afternoon Sunday.
I logged onto my ebay account to be met with a message from ebay saying the seller wants to cancel the sale because we had not paid, and giving a reason that 'I can't wait around forever for you to pay.'
I also had a message from the seller saying they had relisted the item due to our non payment.
I rejected the request to cancel, and paid for the item. I will just have to wait to see if it arrives - they have since cancelled the re-listing.
Surely this seller is being unreasonable?

Yes they are. They seriously need to get a life. I would suggest that within 48 hours is fine. Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

I would expect payment within 24 hours unless the buyer sent a message to say otherwise. I wouldn't mind waiting a few days if they warned me; if they didn't I'd worry they had changed their mind. I wonder if perhaps they wanted to book a courier to collect from them tomorrow so they were wanting quick payment for that? Their reaction was a little OTT though!0

Out of interest what do you do if buyer doesn't pay within your time frame?
OP, the seller is being ridiculously unreasonable, there is no rule that you have to pay immediately and a seller can't even open an NPB until day 2 and then not able to close it until 4 days after that. So the quickest it is possible for a seller to pull out of the sale and prevent the buyer from paying and leaving feedback is 6 days. I think 6 days is too long to wait, but routinely expect to wait 2-3 days.
As it stands seller has caused themselves a whole lot of trouble , they have lost their FVFs , any listing fees and if they refund you now and refuse to send then they lose the 20p that paypal retain. You can also leave them feedback and stars whatever happens now.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. If im not paid after two days - I send a gentle nudge for payment. If after 4 days still no money I open up a non payment case - mostly never hear from the buyer then I close case and get fee credit - then relist
Your seller is very rude and very unreasonable and deserves " appropriate" feedback ! LolStuck on the carousel in Disneyland's Fantasyland

I send a gentle reminder after 2 days.. "I'm going to the post office tomorrow, so if you make payment today you will have your item tomorrow soon.."
However, if I see a listing that says I must pay within 6 hours if I don't, I will be reported, told off, have the book thrown at me, sued for loss of earnings and banned from ebay (or what other nonsense private folk seem to chatter) then I will pay on the 4th day.0 -
I am both a seller and a buyer and it is very annoying when people don't pay quite quickly - say a day as I`m supposed to send item out within a day. I do think some people think they can have two days without paying but I always open a case if they haven't paid by then.0

Your seller is being OTT, but it might be worth dropping them a message, explaining that you didn't have internet connection when the action ended, but made sure you paid as soon as you could.
You can score them accordingly on communication when you leave feedback.0 -
I used to sell on eBay so I'm all to familiar with time wasters. Usually if people don't pay within 48 hours then they don't pay at all and you end up having to chase them for none payment and getting the listing fee back.
I think it's just a courtesy that if you can't pay within 48 hours you should drop the seller a quick email to explain why and when you will pay - otherwise they're just wondering !!!!!! you are doing.0 -

But this seller tried to cancel and relist after 24 hours!:eek:0 -
im buyer and (occasional) seller on ebay, ive had instant payments, people who have taken a week to pay, people who kept saying i will pay on x day that day comes & goes oh il pay y day and same again..
BUT i must confess, a couple of weeks back i bid on a single bedsheet, didnt think any more of it over a week later went back on ebay to see i had a non payment case open!! :O id won it but didnt realise. i emailed the person straight away explaining & apologising and the seller was brilliant about it and said they may not be able to post untill end of the week now as they where working which of course was fine, got my sheet after and the seller has even left me good feedback.. i felt so bad about it but it was a genuine mistake.
i usually pay immediately0
