Just an update. GP had no out of hours care but got redirected to 111 . Was eventually put through to a nurse who was brilliant. She phoned a non emergency ambulance who arrived in a couple of hours. She said mums care was poor and that she should be getting carers.
Ambulance has just left with mum and my sister and I'm going to follow. Have quite aing journey to hospital as local ones not accepting non emergency. Have been warned we still face a 3 hour wait in ambulance bay.

Paramedics quite worried about mum and couldn't believe she was managing with 2 x 15 mins of 'care' a day and a 5 minute nurse visit to administer heparin.

The nurse that the hospice arranged to call me never phoned and to ights'carer' never showed up either.

Hope your mum gets the help she needs. Can I say that if she has cancer ( you didn't say what her medical issue is) she could get Mcmillian nurses or Marie curie nurses to help. Some even do over night care. Hopefully the hospital won't discharge until social issues are sorted out that's what they call non medical issues

  • I felt ashamed reading these sad posts, at the lack of care available to someone like Soolin's Mum. The poor woman is dying, and yet her family have to come on here, to try and get some help and advice.

I sincerely hope Soolin that your Mum, and anyone elses parent in a similar situation, are at least given the chance to die peacefully, and with dignity.

Again I want to thank everyone here who offered support.

I was right to panic, mum was very ill and had to be stabilised in the ambulance and they phoned ahead and were allowed to park in the street and wheel mum along the pavement and straight into a private assessment bay ahead of the queuing ambulances.

Mum has 2 major cancers, only diagnosed 6 weeks ago but is failing fast, she also has secondaries, and DVT with clots in her brain.

The A and E could not have been kinder, once on oxygen and on a proper trolley where she could sit up to ease her lungs (she has lung cancer as a major) she perked up. They stabilised her and did some more scans and x rays as they can't get hold of her medical records at all.

She went to a wonderful ward where the care and attention from two doctors who attended her, and 2 nurses who truly deserve the title 'angel' she was left comfortable at about 4 am this morning.

She has refused all invasive treatment but hospital have assured me they will do whatever she wants.

I have spoken to the home team again this morning and we have agreed that mum is better of not going home to die so if there are no hospice beds I asked that I be given the chance to get a private nursing home. They suddenly can arrange all this and have said that funding wil be produced as well.

There are no Macmillan nurses apparently in the area so mum has been managing with the help of neighbours, 'enablers' who give her 2 x 15 minutes a day, and a nurse that comes in for an injection.

I apologise to anyone who feels my post was not in the spirit of this forum, but I did not know where else to turn yesterday.

    Sorry I have another question.

Mum has 'lost' her bed at the hospice and they are saying she is unlikely to be offered another one in time- is it possible to get her into a hospice out of the area, or are places strictly only for local residents?

She is about to be moved to either a general bed or elderly bed in the hospital, which they agree is not the best care- but I can't even find a nursing home that has a space for end of life nursing.

  • You've probably seen this but if not it might be helpful to find another hospice.

    This might be helpful too.

Hope you get something sorted soon x
  • Soolin I hope today has been more productive for you, and also that your Mum is a little easier.

Thank you again everyone. Whilst I was at hospital today they came and told us that mum has contracted MRSA so would need to be moved to a private ward. However the palliative care team believe mum is in her final weeks now and so have pressed and pressed and got her into a hospice tomorrow

So fingers crossed it goes as planned, incidentally the hospice is aware of the MRSA.
