    So what you are saying is that it's okay for parents with young children to be selfish but not for those without? Just because you feel it's important to be home with children at Christmas doesn't make those who also want to be home with family/friends selfish.

    You need to learn what real priorities are if the most important thing to you is seeing children opening presents. There are far more important things in life. Thousands of parents don't get to see their children open their presents on Xmas morning or the children do the unselfish thing and wait till their parents are home because anyone who works in Health care or Emergency services will usually have to work Xmas day.

    My OH didn't have Christmas ruined or have bad memories because his mother worked. It was still Christmas!

    I know many children, and adults too, who cope perfectly well with the concept the their birthday is on an inconvenient day this year so it is celebrated on a different day (perhaps a Saturday instead of a Monday). So working on the 25th need not mean there isn't a day for Christmas.

    Exactly right.I have worked in the care industry for last 22 years ,I am now at senior level.My children range from 6, 7 and 18.I have always worked Christmas day up till lunch and also will do New years day .I wouldn't dream of expecting to get preferential treatment because I have children. We do much the same everyone does their bit.The care industry doesn't stop because it is Christmas day ,I accepted that when I decided I wanted to work in care.
