IIRC, you can't be forced to work a public holiday regardless of your contract.

I'm working Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Or rather, my night shifts start on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day and I'll finish on 27th December.

If your contract states that you must provide cover for Bank Holidays and weekends, then you must join the rota that provides enough cover for those days.

It sucks that those in charge aren't going to be there though.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

Afraid you are mistaken, their is no right to have public holidays off, although if you work them you are entitled to have a different day off.

Well only insofar as an employee is entitled to a minimum amount of paid leave each year. It's not really about an entitlement to have a day off in lieu of working on a public holiday.

Whatever the legalities of it, a manager effectively saying I'm having the bank holidays off and sod the rest of you is not a good manager and will be creating very bad morale for the rest of the team. If you can, I'd get another job.

Correct but pedantic, leave is normally expressed as x days + 8, although an employer is perfectly entitled to include the 8 days in the minimum 5.6 weeks leave per year an employee is entitled to.

I always work Christmas- I hate it (Christmas), this year for a laugh I put in to have it off thinking no way will I get it. Egg on my face! Now I have to come up with new excuses why I wont be visiting family and going to parties as I have the bloomin lot off.

But to the OP- suck it up. Next year it may be your turn to have the time off.

Agree with this, manager should be ensuring there is sufficient cover, including senior cover, by the sounds of it, he is leaving the "shop floor" to be managed by less senior staff because he wants the time off, probably wouldn't have that scenario most of the year.

Before going in guns blazing as it were I would just say that you think that there is an error with your rota as working on 25th and 1st if you were told that you would only have to work one.

I was in a sort of similar situation a couple of years ago. We were told that too many people had requested time off over Christmas and New Year and were asked if anybody was willing to give up any days. If there were no volunteers then names would be pulled out of a hat. Although I had only requested 1 day and others had asked for 2 or 3 I said OK.
A few days later I heard my manager letting somebody they could have an extra day as the bosses had decided they could get by with fewer people in. I was fuming as I still had no additional days off. What to do though? If I kicked off the person who had been given the day would see it as my fault when it was taken back!
In the end I waited until after Christmas and New Year and then told my manager they needn't expect any favours from me in the future. When she asked my why I told her exactly why. She went scarlet as she didn't think anybody had heard he give the day out. She knew exactly what she was up to, it wasn't a mistake.
I've stuck to my guns ever since.

what a naive view. Could it be (for example) the manager is working the entire xmas period up to this point with no days off.
    Would this build staff morale?
