What Happens at Contract End

"Thinking" about upgrading to IP6 but via contracts.

Seen one that offers 20GB data as I need a big data allowance as the phone is my web access.

I am undecided between the 12 or 24 month contract. The 12 has a large handset upfront cost but splitting the handset from the airtime with a quick sum I come out the airtime is £21 a month for u/l calls, texts and 20GB data for tethering. The 24 month the airtime works out at about £25 a month the same but a £69 up front cost.

A little unkeen about a long contract but I am concerned I would lose my 20GB web browsing allowance at the end of the 12 month period. SIM only only goes up to 10GB - so what happens at contract end??

If I was able to retain my browsing allowance and calls for the same roughly £21 a month at contract end after 12 months I'd be happy but does it work like that? Vodafone do not split handsets and airtime

Contracts dont end, you simply reach the end of the minimum term and then go into a 30 day rolling agreement.

If you want a new phone (by upgrading) it will be a new agreement and could change your allowances and will change your t&c's.

I won't be wanting to have a new phone (upgrade) I just wanted to know what happens at the end of the 12 months - the payments up to that point are high to cover the cost of the "free" handset. After the 12th month do they reduce or do I call up and if I do call up would I lose my allowances. I would not be keen to pay the same "contract price" for the airtime plan after the 12th month because the handset would be paid for.

If you want to retain the same contract (and allowances) then you will need to maintain the same costs. It's a fairly new idea to have separate elements for the phone and airtime (only O2 and Tesco, IIRC).

If you want a cheaper monthly cost you will have to move to a sim only deal or try and negotiate a discount on your price plan (which doesn't really happen, they would rather move you to a sim only new plan).

I see - but the SIM only version does not offer the 20GB browsing allowance - they only go up to 10GB. The 20GB one is only available with a handset.

So the "benefit" of a 24 month contract is knowing you have that allowance for 24 months without the need to negotiate or the danger of being moved to a SIM only with less data??

No one will force you to move to a plan with less data, you are free to stay on the plan after the end of the minimum term, unfortunately you will need to continue paying for the 20GB price plan at the current rate to keep it.

You could call your network and ask what 'deal' they can offer you for sim only
You don't have to accept their offer!

I'd imagine that data allowances will at least double in the next 12 months, so the Sim Only 10G may well be 20Gb+ in 12 months time anyway.

Have you not thought of moving to a different network?
3 do unlimited data plains and if you are Sim only you also get 4g tethering
Have a look at the link below

So an iPhone 6 on a 24 month contract @ £69 upfront then £25 a month for unlimited mins texts and 20gb data........ Really? That's is obscenely cheap. Are you sure it would be that cheap?

He is somehow splitting the handset cost out (not sure at what rate) so it's actually going to £25 + £? for the handset per month.
