Anyone know about exploding batteries and damage caused?

Just wondering whether there are any consumer rights to protect the purchaser for damage caused by batteries.
I think everyone is familiar with cheap batteries exploding if left for a long period of time, I was wondering whether there was any protection for the consumer.
In my own case, rather familiar with the idea of cheap batteries exploding I decided to go for duracell the only batteries which I was confident that I did trust.
I was somewhat horrified to discover the other day that these had leaked over some expensive equipment. They are clearly dated as best before March 2019 so well within their expiry. They have not been exposed to heat or direct light.
So before complaining to duracell I thought I should just check my consumer rights. I suspect that I don't have any. But worth a query.
Then comes the next problem - if I can't trust duracell who can i trust for remote controls etc?
