Leaking Battery in elctronic gadget

Got an electronic gadget a couple of years ago which has always worked fine. (from reptuble chain of stores) Ran out of power of bought some new batteries, decent branded ones too, within their use by date, and within a few weeks gadget stopped working, opened up battery compartment and the batteries have all leaked everywhere.
Do I have any grounds to complain to battery company for ruining gadget? Thanks :-)

Possible, although you may have to prove that the battery was faulty and caused the damage rather than it being misuse. Also any legal claim you have would be against the retailer you purchased the battery from rather than the manufacturer.
Who was the manufacturer? I know that Duracell offer a guarantee (in addition to your legal rights) that if any product is damaged by their batteries they will repair or replace it - http://www.duracell.com/en-US/battery-care-disposal.jspx0
