How do you decide?

HI All,

I have two girls both at school full time, i currently work 09.30-15.00 m-f with additional work i carry out at home.

I have been offered a job out of the blue from an assessor who visited our offices and assessed my ISO work. It would be full time and probably be demanding with the paperwork and research on a night time.

However the salary is twice as much as i am currently on (its rubbish for what i actually do at the moment).

The problem is do i take it? the money would be fantastic i could finally get a new car, pay more off the mortgage but would i be losing time with the kids. I have the option of my Uncle collecting the girls every day and watching them if needed as he is retired and would appreciate the 'cash' (a small petrol amount really).

How do you decide?

I've been Money Tipped! Debt-free and Proud!
A number of factors would help me to chose.

    1. How old are your children? Have they only just started school, or are they settled and used to it?

    2. Do you need the extra money? Do you have debt, or are finances tight?

    3. How much time would you lose with your children?

Personally, if I'd 'only' lose 2 hours or so, but have double the money, I'd go for it. But its easy for me to say that, as its not my situation.
I would definitely keep weekends free, so that you can spend quality time with your children.

Is there any flexibility in the hours of the new job (eg. longer days 2 days a week, but an early finish one day so you can still collect from school, etc)?

For me it would depend on the ages of the children. If they are at or heading towards secondary school I'd jump at the chance, if they've just started primary I wouldn't do it. Also, would it interfere with any out of school activities they do?

  • HI All,

they are 5 and 8 so established at school, i would lose dropping the girls off on a morning so half hour there then lose picking up from school so maybe 2.5 hours on a night depending on traffic.

The thought of the extra cash is so tempting and the experience this would give me within the quality management industry would be fantastic to possibly in the future become an assessor (i would only need to work a few days a week then if i wanted).

The thought that the children might be missing out with time from me is making me doubt it.

we have no debts but there is never enough cash for spends, we always save up for items (i.e new cars etc) where this would give me a disposable income of an extra £700 per month.
  • They currently do cheerleading on a wednesday but it isnt until 6 so they can still continue with that, swimming is saturday morning so no issues with that.

If it's what you feel like doing loopyloo, then go for it. You seem keen, and if it doesn't suit after say a year, then go back to part time.

    It can't hurt. :)

Have you took into account what will happen in the holidays?
Have a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T
  • The holidays do worry me, but i tend to have two weeks off in the main hols and we go away if possible. The remaing they go to holiday camp which is £9 a day and one day at the grandparents. I have always had to cover holidays anyway with my job its just longer days for them unfortunately.

My head says go for it but my heart says no. I think part of it stems from my childhood, my mom was a single mom always struggled financially but was always there to pick me up from school etc but she always struggled financially and i always said i wanted the kids to never feel like we are short on money. They do know i work hard to provide for things and mommy goes to work to pay for presents for santa and them to have nice things and a house etc.
