On Saturday morning, when the initial press release was made.. everyone seemed to head to the supermarkets.. people were falling over themselves for water.. be it still, sparkling, flavoured or tonic. The shelves were cleared within about half an hour !
This morning, the same thing happenned again, only this time, its for Bread, milk and tinned goods.
We should all be working together and making sure everyone gets equal amounts. One guy at tesco helped himself to 11 bottles of water, leaving everyone else with 1 each !
For those without water, heres some tips I`ve picked up from various sources ...
Invest in some buckets, or anything you can put water into, collect water from puddles.. and put a bucket outside to catch the rain.. then you can use this to flush your toilets !
Get some baby wipes... these are excellent for cleaning yourself !!
Anti-bacterial hand gel is excellent instead of washing your hands.
Some dry shampoo will also help with keeping your hair from looking greasy !
.. and one for the men - wee in the garden !! Have seen quite a few men doing this alongside the road !

Flushing the loo - far more effective to take the lid off the cistern and fill that than chuck buckets of water down the loo bowl itself.
Assuming the sewers haven't backed up, of course ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
The sewers are backing up in some areas here
Some people were given sandbags, told to move as much furniture as poss upstairs and were advised to leave. We've been boiling water to wash with, then saving it to flush the loo with.

I am in Cheltenham and have been without mains water since monday afternoon. Picked up 12 pints of bottled water yesterday. I have taken my gutter downpipes apart and have buckets under them. Rain forecast for next 2 days, so may be able to flush the loo. Problem now is washing the kids and clothes0

if the rain's heavy enough and its not too cold and your kids aren't tiny put them out in the rain for a few minutes in their cozzies with a bit of shower gel! I'm sure rainwater is clean enough for that and they'll see it as an adventure... Not sure that will work for clothes though.
My cousin used to say he got 4 days wear out of his boxers: right way round, back to front, inside out, inside out and back to front... gross.
I hope you all get reconnected to the mains soon :-( It is frustrating not being able to help practically when there's so much water in the shops everywhere else.0 -
If you have electricity and can cook then use your water as efficiently as possible
Use the water to boil veg and anything else, once you have used it for cooking one meal in then add dried peas if you have them or can get them - or even lentils - and boil up again according to instructions (frozen peas work a treat too and possibly more efficent as don't take long to cook) - mush them up and you have pea soup! That way you will be able to use all the water and just flush your loo with rain water

For the Laydees, using pantyliners can help with keeping the laundry pile down
.
Hanging your clothes up with access to fresh air can let you wear the same shirt/top etc for much longer.
We are also using paper plates and cups for eating and drinking as that cuts down on the washing up.
When you boil water use some to fill up a flask for later use.
All I can say is thank goodness we got our power (and phone) back, otherwise it would be much worse. One whole day and night was bad enough .
Yesterday morning, there was a free delivery of water here from a huge supermarket truck that helped enormously ......the local bowsers weren't filled 'til last evening even though they were delivered on Monday0
