Have you missed the bit where OP reread the letter and it did say the policy would auto renew unless cancelled?
Actually, it wasn't a letter - how Admiral in 2013 (and previous years) communicated with me - but halfway down an e-mail that was captured by my junk folder. Everything was done to make sure I missed the move to auto renewal.0 -

I thought I would post an update. Admiral did refund me in full after I wrote in and copied the letter to compliance. At first, they refunded me only a quarter of the cost of the premium but after the case was reviewed (I guess by compliance), they then decided to refund me the balance outstanding. They say they don't think they acted inappropriately but want to bring the matter to a close. While I don't agree, I am relieved to have my money back but wished I hadn't had to have expended so much energy doing so.
Thank you to the many posters on here who provided helpful suggestions, very much appreciated.0
