Me too. I miss Connor's posts, though - they were always worth reading, though he could be a bit abrupt at times.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

I work in a transport office and my hubby is a HGV driver. Peoples attitudes to drivers makes me FURIOUS. 'they are only drivers....' etc. It is quite right what one of the above posters say about certain people treating them like second class citizens. Drives me mad to hear it.
The opposite of what you know...is also true

I'm afraid no matter what you do, your treated as a 2nd class citizen. It's our lovely class system where everyone likes to think they're better than the next person.

They must do it for love.what other job do you do your work all day or night and then sleep with the machine? If the lorry breaks down its the drivers fault, traffic jam? drivers fault contents damaged on arrival?ditto. They have driving hours that see them fined if exceeded and have to have different certificates for carrying different hazardous goods. They are out in all weathers coping with rain, snow and wind.coming from calais/dover they risk illegals getting into the back of their lorries and fined when their caught.and for all that their paid less than the lowest grade civil servant.Without them we wouldnt have our food on the table fuel in our car or many other things we take for granted each day.
counting down the time I got left.:beer:

Everything you buy or use has travelled on a truck at some point in it's life!

A national drivers strike would bring the country to a big, chaotic stop in days, supermarkets would be empty within 36 hours!

Nope, never in a million years! Shame really 'cos it might just educate everyone & move truck drivers one step up the perception ladder, just above of your average pile of dog waste ;)

Don't forget almost all PCV / HGV drivers need to hold a drivers CPC

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/CaravansTrailersCommercialVehicles/DG_171186

Friend of mine was out of work, managed to get a grant to train as a HGV driver. Found it difficult to get a driving job after he passed as everyone wanted experienced drivers. He signed up with an agency and went driving gritters for a local authority. Six months of that and people were willing to give him a job

Job vacancies appear to be on the increase here in the East Riding of Yorkshire, apparently a lot of drivers from the ex eastern bloc countries are going home as the wages etc have improved at home

    Good luck
