3 Network SIMM in Unlocked Phone

I plan to buy my son a 2nd hand mobile phone on EBay but am concerned about comparability with his existing SIMM.
It is a network 3 SIMM with contract and he needs 3G, if I buy any unlocked phone, will his existing SIMM work ok.

Yes, until it gets blocked as reported stolen, as is pretty common for phones 'sold' on ebay.

It will if it's a 3G capable phone.

I have bought several phones on eBay and not had any problems at all.

I have bought several (low-spec) phones on ebay over the years and none has ever been blocked, so I don't know how much of an issue that is.

Any proof to back up your statement that it is common for phones sold on eBay to be blocked?

I've bought a number of phones from eBay over the years, as have many people I know, I haven't heard of anyone buying a blocked phone from eBay.

  • pauljoanss - Not sure how much you are intending to spend on the phone but if it's in the region of £50 take a look at Argos £49.99 ZTE Blade 3 smart phone.
It's had a fairly good set of reviews on the tech websites and as it would be new you have the warranty cover of it being from a high street retailer.

its not as common as people make out but definitely somet to be concerned about, its more common for the top end phones though.

One thing - if you want to be able to put the SIM straight in without any fuss, check that the new phone takes the same size of SIM. What does he currently have?

It's safer buying from eBay and paying with PayPal than buying from Gumtree (where the risk is probably something to mention).

The likelihood of an established eBay seller doing it is extremely small.
