Blockers flash, but not always.

Do you use adblock plus or adguard adblocker ? and if so, do they work every time you turn your laptop on?. Mine start intermittently. When they don't, I have to go to manage>extensions>enable>disable>enable>refresh and then they do, I wonder why?

Maybe something's corrupt in your browser profile... or there's a bug in one of the add-ons...?

In Firefox under Windows 7, the bookmarks toolbar appears completely empty when opening the browser. I have to hide & un-hide it to get the entries to appear. It doesn't happen when I use a clean profile with no add-ons, however...

thanks, I should have said I'm using chrome, even though I have FF & IE but haven't installed the blockers on them.

You may wish to try a newer one, that's also lighter on resources I read. Called, ublock, I use it when I'm on Chrome and it works well.

Thanks, I will remove both of mine and try yours.

Well abibee, it seems to working well. I suppose the test will come tomorrow when I turn the laptop on. For now though, it's going off. Come back to see how I find it.

As a matter of interest, did you try any of the others and how did you find them and how did you hear about this one.

I've only used Adblock Plus (using it on Firefox) and ublock on Chrome. And both run well, I've had no issues like you describe.

The person who makes ublock posts regularly on a forum I read every now and then, and it has good reviews and a long dedicated thread. I like it on my mum's old laptop, as it apparently uses a lot less resources than the other better-known ones, which can only be a good thing.

To see if it's a problem with your Chrome profile or other add-ons, you could try creating a new (additional) profile, install just the add-on you're having problems with, and see if the problems still occur...

You would think that after using the web for quite a number of years, I would know the answer to this but I don't, maybe you do?.

I like to block ads. I have used several of them in turn, adblock, super, plus and one other. Now I have uBlock. They work fine initially but within 24 hrs or so, they don't. To activate them, I follow the same pattern, rt click on icon > manage > see they are enabled > disable > enable > refresh then off we go, they work.

It would seem to me that somewhere something either needs checking or unchecking or my antivirus Avast is stopping it.

Maybe someone can enlighten me please?.

    PS, what is meant by:-

you could try creating a new (additional) profile

Trying to find out exactly what's wrong isn't easy. I use Avast too and don't have any problems with Adblock Plus (in either Firefox or Chrome), although I didn't install all the default browser add-ons, etc. that came with Avast.

The problem is most likely to be due to either with a corrupt profile or a bug in an add-on. A bug in one add-on might cause unexpected problems with a different add-on, so it's not always the add-on that isn't working that is causing the problems.

The first thing I'd try is disabling all the add-ons except the ad-blocking one that's causing problems -- if it then works, you can try enabling your other add-ons to try to find out which add-on is causing the ad-blocking one to fail. Then you can report a bug (or just disable one of the add-ons or just live with it!)

    ,

Just like you can have different user profiles to log in to Windows, you can create different profiles in web browsers too. Every now and then (but quite rarely) a profile can become corrupted causing odd browser behaviour. Creating a new profile (and copying across any bookmarks, cookies, add-ons, etc.) would fix such an issue.

By default, browsers run and "log you in" with a default user profile. Creating a new clean profile will use the browser's default settings and won't have any add-ons you've installed in your default (or any other) profile. You can easily switch between profiles, so you can play about without affecting your original default profile.

The link I gave previously explains how to create and choose between profiles in Chrome. For reference, in Firefox, you can open the profile selector by starting the browser with the -p switch (i.e. go to Start/Run, type "firefox -p" and hit enter).

    Hope that helps...

Hang on... It might be worth closing all browser tabs except one, navigating to a blank page (or one without adverts), deleting your cache, then closing & re-opening the browser.

I just wondered if the ad-blocker works by preventing advert images to be downloaded... If it does and you happen to have the adverts cached locally, the browser might be displaying them anyway bypassing the ad-blocker.

Probably not, but it's worth a go!

Hi, before I embark on anything you've posted since my last one at 3.35, I have been off line and am now back and uBlock is working fine. So what's caused that I ask myself. The first thing is that earlier, before I logged off, I removed Adblock plus. I'm wondering if by having two blockers working side by side was the cause. Rather than do anything, I will leave well alone and monitor tomorrow, giving feedback as and when. Thanks for keeping an eye on this thread though.
