Used to live in the same area in one of the MOD built flats. They may be rendered but they are block or brick. They certainly weren't built by WIMPY.

The flats are definitely brick, having had a few issues with drilling through the walls of one.

Something you might want to watch out for if you are thinking of buying is that the houses are leasehold not freehold, there is a service contract to be paid.

When I last looked at one of these houses when I last moved there was a major issue with the drains which the leaseholders are responsible to pay.

Not sure how this has been affected by the humungous marine base that has just been built and will be connected to the same services grid.
  • My husband worked for Wimpey and at first glance he thought it was a Wimpey no fines plus they were down in the Plymouth area for some time.
However, the above poster has answered your question.

Thanks for the interesting replies :)

I've checked the status and it is a freehold house, but Ulfar you're right that there is a management fee for the shared services.

    I've just found this document:
    http://www.plymouth.gov.uk/ehspartthree.pdf
    Barne Barton
This is a large estate to the west of Plymouth, fronting the River Tamar. Between 1995 and 1998,
a consortium of four housing associations acquired and repaired 638 units for letting. These are
mainly terraced two and three bedroom Wimpey ‘no fines’ houses, and flats.
This isn't referring to the exact estate where the for sale house is, the HA ones are next door but look from the outside exactly the same. Very confusing.

It is pretty easy to tell the houses on the estate that are housing association or council as they tend to have a different style.

There are also lot of new build housing association houses on the estate that I wouldn't touch with a bargepole but you can tell most of these as they are an awful yellow and grey brick.

If you look at the photo you can see how these houses have been cut into the hill, due to this you get very little garden space.

It is pretty easy to tell who built the houses on the estate by their style as there are distinct tranches.

Any good local surveyor will be able to tell you what construction was used. I would never go for one of the council built places, or any of the ones close to the house you posted. You want one over the other side that look towards the bridge. Better gardens, bigger houses pretty much the same price.

Another interesting question, those 1950s houses in the first link, I'm not sure how those are constructed either. In other areas of Plymouth that wasn't a good era!

  • If you can look in the loft.

When your up there look at the gable end from the inside. From here you should be able to tell if it is brick, block or system built.
