Can't beat it - £361.60 - but if you're interested you can fly for virtually the same price on American Airlines via different airports - instead of just via Chicago, you could go via Chicago and Dallas - thus getting extra miles and the possibility of earning frequent flyer status if you intend to fly American Airlines regularly.

In basic terms, if you can fly a route and bag a total of 5,000 elite qualifying points you can earn a back door to Gold status with the airline. If you get 10,000 points you can earn Platinum status. Each level comes with privileges - you can find those on http://www.aa.com. The back door in is called a Challenge and you can find many posts about it on http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=445 which is a forum dedicated to American Airlines frequent flyers.

Your routing says you've got a seven hour wait at Gatwick on the way back - I'd recommend booking into an airport hotel. Can't beat the price by flying from Glasgow to Hurghada via Gatwick on British Airways unless you can get from Scotland to Gatwick and back again for £329.60 - the price of your flights from Gatwick to Hurghada is £1,343.20 for 4 of you.

If you can split the airlines, discuss with your travel agent this possibility - flying to Cairo from London with Austrian Airlines and back with Swiss:

    20 Dec
    Austrian flight 452 Heathrow-Vienna
Austrian flight 7141 (operated by EgyptAir) Vienna-Cairo

    7 Jan
    Swiss flight 237 Cairo-Zurich
    Swiss flight340 Zurich-Heathrow

    Found this itinerary for £408.

Or you could fly Turkish Airlines via Istanbul for £404.

You don't post the price found on Expedia (it's coming up as £287.37 on Expedia) but on http://www.aa.com it's £267.40 for these flights. Always book direct with the airline if you can - you'll get the best price. Expedia is a middle man.

We are going to a wedding in Chicago and AA and BA flight prices are about the same. On Expedia its about £1,500 for a hotel to be included near the centre of Chicago. Can anybody suggest anything better/cheaper.

    Many thanks.
