When a pilot is going through his pre-flight checklist I would assume that he checks everything methodically and only goes on to the next step when the previous one is completed. The pilot would probably expect to lose his job if he didn't do it correctly.
The mechanic in the garage seems to go through his service checklist and completes the items he feels like and doesn't bother with those he doesn't want to. Numerous surveys from people like trading standards indicate that this is the case.
When I started this thread that is the sort of discussion I expected. People will take their car in for servicing year after year and never have their pollen filter changed even though they are paying for the service. The mechanic must just tick the box even though he hasn't done the job.
