Pollen Filters

As the replies above. My Mondeo TDCi at 7 years old was smelling of rotten leaves and misting up badly. The pollen filter is definitely part of the service according to Haynes, and I changed it. Mouldy leaves smell gone (and the filter was soaking wet and full of ... mouldy leaves) and the car no longer has a misting problem.
I think the filter was about £15 and looked very like a large air filter - nothing special, just folded paper. The 'correct' way to remove and replace involves a lot of dismantling, but Haynes suggested a quick way (less dismantling, more jiggling about) which worked fine. I will be replacing it every year from now on.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
I've never seen a pollen filter check on a service list before, it's either a replacement item or it's not inspected at all.
It's an inspect item and replace if dirty on and replace every other service my car. Love my new car position just behind the glove box two pegs to twist out and replace l. Old corsa was a right pain the backside to replace.0 -
GSF are usually really good.
If it's been in there years could be a pound or 2 of dirt in it.0 -
I'm afraid GSF are wrong. Pollen filters are changed for the reasons given above. In some cars they are a pain to change so may be why some dont bother.0

Fred - the Ford Focus has the same problem - you need to be a midget contortionist to get at the pollen filter - I have had a brand new one for ages that I can't face changing0

My question really was about the behaviour of the mechanic at the garage. I have never taken a car for a service in my life so I don't really know what it's like. Would the mechanic tick the box and say it's OK even though he has no idea. Would he just phone you up and say you need a new one with an extra charge? Surely he wouldn't take it out, have a look and put it back! I am tempted to go into a Ford garage and ask the service manager, but it's pointless really. After years of servicing his own cars my dad bought a brand new one and took it to the dealer for servicing. Just caused loads of aggro. Nothing on the list ever seemed to be done. The oil was exactly the same as when he took it in. They used to say thing like - For complete customer satisfaction we will repeat the oil change and then they would actually do it. If I bought a used car with FSH I would have no confidence whatsoever that anything had actually been done at a service.0

Yes he would take it out and look at it, could just need a bang.
Would rather get my 16 year old brake fluid changed than a pollen filter though.0 -
Focus Mk2/Volvo S50/V50 was a nightmare to get at. Think it was quoted as a 45 minute job.0

My Pug 206 had one and it was filthy when I originally got the car so changed it. 2 years later (12K miles) it was filthy again so changed it again.
My current Megane has one and it is also filthy and I will change it when I get round to it.
Bit weird for a motor factors to say that nobody changes them, maybe that is why they are always filthy. They only cost around a fiver on ebay.0 -
Got mine for around a fiver from Europarts.
Easy peasy to change on a Citroen C3, just under the driver's wiper. Took 5 minutes.
The car has 65K on it and has been in the family since new, the filter was black and no amount of banging it or putting an air gun on it would have got it clean.0
