Hive price for non BG customers
Options
My Wife and I have been considering Hive for a while now. Looking at the site shows 2 prices, one for BG customers and one for non BG customers which is £50 more. Are there any incentives (i.e. lower prices/ discount codes) for non BG customers at all?
Would a BG customer need to order installation at their billing address, or could they order for a nominated address? (I think I know the answer already!)
Thanks
Mark

Having looked into the smart thermostat systems out there in huge detail (I'm a real obsessive when I'm planning to buy something) I've come to the conclusion that all these single zone 'smart' thermostats are basically very much flawed. I have now (even though it's going to cost me much more) decided to go down the multi zone route with the Honeywell Evohome. Like they state in their blurb, you don't have one controller for your whole house lighting so why would you want one for your heating? Surely this is where any real savings can be made with these things?0

I concur with MBS. I have the EvoHome system installed and it is brilliant. You could just install the Evohome Controller, HW kit and Access Kit and have what Hive gives you as well as the ability to configure up to 12 separate zones in the future. For slightly less cash, then look at Heat Genius.

Evohome now does geolocation via the IFTTT app. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

And if you have a combi boiler there's no need for the HW kit which means you can 'replicate' the single whole house smart meters for £240 now (base pack, mobile access gateway). With the all-important ability to add more TRVs to the system over time until your whole house is sorted. IMO it's the way forward, as evidenced by Tado now looking to go the multi zone route with their new smart thermostat.0 -
When we talk multi zone, how is this achieved? Our radiators all have separate valves on them. Are you saying that there is a kit which will replace/ monitor them too?0

Exactly that. Manual TRV heads can be replaced with Honeywell wifi TRV heads. If you have manual TRVs then this is a 5 minute job. if you don't have TRVs then time/cost is greater. The cost of each TRV head is c.£60 but it gives you full control of the temperature in a room (or zones as Honeywell call them). Here you go ....

Looks good, but I don't know if we need anything that clever. We don't have fixed on/ off times in the house as sometimes the Wife works from home, in which case the heating stays on. All we do at present is leave the heating on 24/7 and set the 'stat to 21C if home and drop it to 12C when we go out. It is the wife that doesn't remember to turn off the heating, so an app to do so would be good.0

That's what we do with our programmable stats.
They remember where they should be so if you adjust them either up or down they will revert to their settings when the next switching cycle commences. You can fit a wireless one for only £50 if you've got basic DIY skills and basic electric knowledge.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
We have Hive and I would recommend it. I don't have experience with the other multi room models, but it works for us. I find the stat in the front room on the mantelpiece pretty much gets it right for the whole house. I only have one room in the house that gets hotter, and it has always had the rad valve turned down a little to compensate and it's fine.0

The whole point about zoning is it lets you keep the areas you are using as warm as you want WITHOUT heating the other rooms you may ocassionally visit. Like I said in my original post, having one light switch for the whole house would be considered daft. It's zoning where the real moneysaving potential is.0 -

The Evohome controller is designed with zoning in mind; however, it does everything that The Hive does - and more. In my view, zoning will take-off in the UK - as has been the case in mainland Europe for a number of years. The cost of controllable TRVs will fall, and Evohome owners will have the ability to expand into zoning if they so wish. As MBS has said, the system is ideal for homeworkers as it allow for just one room to be heated to say, 20C, with the rest at, say, 10C. We have already seen a 25% reduction in gas usage for water heating due to reduced boiler firings. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
