Solar PV

Hi all,
Been reading through a few articles and thinking of getting Solar PV installed.
I have contacted a few suppliers, one of whom has made an appointment to come out to my house to appraise site and give me a quote.

I was hoping that others on this forum could give me some input on things to look out for etc.
I'd also be interested to know what the general consensus is on them - are they worth the outlay, and is it a good "investment".

If anyone has had them for a long time, have they had any issues with them on failures or loss of performance etc.

Thanks,
Damian.
Cheers,

They are a serious eyesore on the house, that is one starter for ten and apparently reduce the value of the house due to the impact on the look.
  • Please OP.. do a search on this forum..... topic has been covered a number of times.... Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease don't start another thread........

    Depends on where they are.

We have water heating panels on the rear of the house - they cant be seen from the road.

If we were to install photovoltaic, they'd be on the back of the garage thus unseen.

All across the front of a house are unsightly though.

Don't get the free ones - as you are tied into them for years and it may impact future selling etc.

The paid ones are IMO are very good investment.

Interesting perspective, is there a permanent lowering of house values with these devices attached?

Also from N Ireland - had panels installed in December - can give you name of company if you like. Fortunate to have bungalow with long south facing back and able to fit 26 panels in 2 rows of 13 (6.5kW) without being unsightly.
Panels have worked perfectly, albeit only 10 months old, and exceeded estimated production with actual to date = 4596 kWh against estimated = 3951 giving a projected payback of 6-7 years.
    Some points:
1 - only worthwhile if can buy outright preferably without loan
2 - not worthwhile if intending to move within 10 years
3 - return proportionately better the larger the installation but think max for feed in tariff reduced from 6.5 when I installed to 4kW now
4 - some parts of NI grid, particularly in west, are overloaded and not able to accept any more installations.

Is it not negated if the house value drops?

Cant see it having any negative impact as the panels are to the back of the house.

I really don't understand the level of negativity to having them installed.
Whenever I see panels I think cheaper house running costs....
